My wife and and I would like to hike the Haute Route (or some similar high altitude extended hike), and our most convenient time would be late June and early July. Does anyone have input on trail conditions then? We are not afraid of a little occasional snow in the passes, but worry about extended periods of slogging through snow in cold conditions. Also are the high altitude huts open this time of the year? Thanks for any first-hand info on hiking in the high alps that time of year.

Hi rcl1884! Late June/early July is rather early in the season. Most paths and huts will be open, but there will still be large sections covered by snow. Carrying an ice axe may even be necessary, as you'll get as high up as nearly 3,000 metres. The SAC website informs you about huts along the way; this information be helpful too. If you think this is too strenuous, you can search for easier alternatives at lower altitude, such as sections of the Via Alpina or the Alpine Passes Trail. By all means, make sure that you're in good shape and prepare well for your mountain hikes.
