Train between Switzerland and Austria- Covid
A vaccinated couple from the US is landing in Zurich on September 1st and traveling through Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Austria before heading back to Zurich on the 13th. They're looking for advice on COVID-related travel documents needed for trains between these countries, and if they'd face extra logistical challenges by adding Austria to their itinerary.
- Check the latest COVID regulations for Switzerland and Austria before traveling, as they can change frequently.
- Make sure to have your vaccination proof ready for transit and entry into Austria.
- If you need a COVID test in Austria before returning to Switzerland, plan to get the results in time for your flight back to the US.
- Consider getting a Swiss Travel Pass for convenient train travel within Switzerland and to neighboring countries.

Hi,
We are a vaccinated couple from the US, flying to Zurich on September 1st. I think we have figured out the requirements for flying into Switzerland without needing a covid test or quarantine (proof of vaccination, which is our CDC card, right? And the online form the generated the QR code for contact tracing). We’ll be in Grindelwald for a few days, then taking the train for a night in Liechtenstein and a few nights in Saltzburg before returning to Zurich to fly out on the 13th. Do we need any other covid vaccine-related documents to go by train between those countries? We are also thinking we’ll need to get a covid test in Austria before we travel back to Switzerland to get the results back in time for our flight back to the US. Had anyone done all this recently? Anything we are missing? Is it crazy to add Austria into this itinerary with all the extra logistics related to covid?
Thank you for any advice you might have!
