Train reservation for Switzerland itinerary

Short summary – read this first

Rajeev, a traveler, is planning a trip to Switzerland from late July to early August with his partner and their 3-year-old child. He is looking for advice on which excursions need reservations and how far in advance he should book them, as he has already started planning his journey but has faced some changes.

Key takeaways:
  • Most scenic train routes, including Montreux to Interlaken, do not require reservations; just board the train at the station.
  • For summer travel, it’s recommended to reserve seats on the Golden Pass trains between Montreux and Zweisimmen.
  • Children under 6 usually travel for free, but your child can have their own seat if desired.

    Hi all,

Could you please guide me on what all excursions would need reservations and how much in advance I should be doing it. My plans are to cover:

    1. Gruyeres cheese factory and Broc chocolate factory by Goldenpass Line

    2. Montreux to Interlaken by Goldenpass line

    3. Wengen Excursions: Schilthorn, Jungfraujoch, Grindelwald

    5. Meiringen from Wengen by Goldenpass Line

    6. Lucerne from Meiringen by Goldenpass Line

    7. Lucerne Excursions: Titlis, Pilatus and Rigi

    Any help is highly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Rajeev

Hello. Sorry my bad. I forgot to mention few important things.

We are a young couple with a 3 year old and shall be in Switzerland from 30th July to 11 August. So far I have booked two 15 day STPs and made a reservation for Montreux to Interlaken. And when I booked Montreux to Interlaken, I had to change my plan a bit because I was not able to get the desired reservation. That’s why I have posted here to seek guidance for rest of the journeys/experiences.

Please let me know if any more info is required.

None of those trains (not even Montreux to Interlaken) require reservations. Just go to the station, find your train and get on.

OK. So, reservations are recommended between Montreux and Zweisimmen on the actual Golden Pass trains at that time.

You won’t need any other reservations but see optional “reservations” for Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn.

Thanks for your responses. My only worry is that I don’t want to left stranded at the railway station waiting for the next train just because the train I planned on boarding is full with reservations.

One more thing I wanted to ask: Can our 3 year old occupy a seat on his own. If not, what is the way around it as he is not so small that we can comfortably have him in our lap all the time.

    Thanks

    Hello RajeevK,

Making reservations on the Swiss trains is the exception, so you will definitely NOT find the train fully booked out, this simply doesn’t happen on normal trains.
The worst think that can happen, is that the train is full as is crowded, but you will still be allowed to board and travel with it. In such a situation your little one would be the one expected to travel on the parent’s lap, as he’s traveling for free. But this barely happens.

    Happy journeys!

    Best,
    Steph

    Rajeev,

Turns out we will be doing many of those same things around the same time.

The only one I made reservations for is #2. Montreux – Zweisimmen and Zweisimmen – Interlaken Ost. Seems advisable given the summer rush, and since we have kids along.

#1, 3.1, 5 & 6 are all covered by the STPs. #3.2 requires separate tickets (25% off with STP) and seat reservations. We haven’t made them yet, since it is so weather-dependent.

We aren’t doing #7, and I don’t believe they are fully covered by the STP (could be wrong). Also, I didn’t get the sense they needed reservations.

    Hope that helps,

    Ram
