Planning early morning train travel for four persons (2 adult, 1 senior, 1 child – age 9) on May 3, 2018, from Lauterbrunnen to Jungfraujoch and return. To get lowest possible total cost for all do I buy one Swiss Half Fare Card (HFC) and request Free Family Card (so child rides free) and also purchase three other tickets (one of which might be discounted because of the HFC). Also, when to buy all the tickets; now or during April? This is the only planned train travel in Switzerland for us.

Hi coyote and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

If that is your only train travel then buying a Swiss Half-Fare Card (for CHF120 doesn’t make sense). You can buy a Junior Travel Card from any station for the 9-year old and they can then travel “free” as opposed to half-fare.

Don’t buy any tickets until you are sure the weather is favourable. Unless you are happy to spend a lot of money to look at the inside of clouds. You won’t have any trouble buying tickets on the day of travel at that time of year.

    Hi Coyote,

The math wouldn’t make sense on the Swiss Half Fare Card if that is your only trip (including other trains, cable cars, buses etc) in Switzerland. The SHFC is 120chf and that reduces the Jungfraujoch trip by about 95chf (50%) – so pay 120 to save 95.

Thanks for your input. Did not know about the Junior Travel Card; sure makes sense to buy it instead and, I will.

Thanks for the info and math; it makes better sense to not buy the Swiss Half Fare Card buy instead purchase a Junior Travel Card for the youngster as suggested by another member.
