Trip report Great Train Tour of Switzerland
-
My wife and I have just completed the Great Train Tour of Switzerland using Swiss Travel Passes and some reserved seats. It was Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken, Montreux, Zermatt, St Moritz, Lugano, Lucerne, Zurich. Our Travel Agent had never booked such a thing before, which we compiled after seeing Michael Portillo’s TV show. So it was a combined mistake that had us doing the trip in 9 days with an 8 day STP Flex and 1 day rail ticket. Either, we should have taken more time (preferred option) or we should have purchased the normal 8 day pass.
Still, the journey was wonderful and breathtaking. The trips to Jungfraujoch for the Jungfrau experience and to Gornergrat for the Matterhorn were both exciting and mandatory. The panoramic trains were hugely comfortable, thanks to the advice of my skin specialist to take first class carriages. The views along all of the routes were interesting, beautiful and not, as a colleague described them, one boring picture postcard after another!
Thanks, too, to MySwissAlps contributors for the help and answers they gave to my questions. They “settled the mind” enormously and I am very grateful. We are back home now and will reflect on our Swiss holiday for some time to come. Wiedersehen!
