    Hi there!

    We are looking to make a day trip using Golden Pass line from Lucerne to Montreux. It seems it will be around 5.5 hours of journey before we reach Montreux. That seems a lot of seating time. We have read lots of good review about this route so tempted to attempt it. We wanted to know some views from experts if this is advisable. Couple of queries that we have:

    (1) Is this trip recommended? We are planning to do Glacier express as well so just thinking if that is too much train time vs out in the field.

    (2) Are there any stops worth spending some time like Gstaad?

    (3) What are the activities to do at Montreux. We have marked Chillon Castle as the place to see.

    (4) If there is any other recommendation for a day trip from Lucerne so that we could consider alternatives.

    Thanks much for your help. Appreciate that these are very open ended queries.

    Regards

    On the way back, we can reduce the time by traveling on the normal train and come via Berne.

    5.5 hours should be the round trip time. It’s 2:45 to 3 hours from Lucerne to Montreux.

    1) it’s a nice view of lake Geneva traveling down to Montreux during the last leg of the trip. Is it worth the time spent? Not unless you visit some sites in Montreux. Chillon is a good stop. I’m sure others will have suggestions to add.

    Thanks. This is what I noted of the route

    (1) Luzern to Interlaken -> 1.50 mins using Golden Pass Line

    (2) Interlaken to zweisimmen -> 1.10 mins

    (3)zweisimmen to Montreux -> 1.48 mins

    These timings are for Golden Pass lines. There could be other shorter route to reach faster but it seems with 3 legs it takes around 5.5 hours with 2 inter changes at Interlaken to Zweisimmen from Luzern.

    Regards

    Yes, you are right! I used the SBB app on my iPhone and got the wrong route. On top of it all, I traveled the route last year and could have sworn it was a much shorter trip (from Montreux to Luzern).

    Hi sgandhi73,

    I thought the trip was a nice one – read about it here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/goldenpass
    Montreux is the main attraction for most (and me) so I’d head straight there. For ideas about what to do look here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/montreux/activit ies

    There are many alternative day trips from Lucerne but it depends on your interests. How about the 2 hour Voralpen Express to St. Gallen?

    Read about a recent trip I took there here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/forum/topic/st-gallen-voralpen-express-from-zurich

    and another member, Slowpoke, wrote up his thoughts in St. Gallen here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/forum/topic/st-gall-aka-sankt-gallen-and-good-bratwurst
