Hi, we would like to visit the 3 mountains during our 3 days stay in Lucerne in December.

    (1) Which mountain (Mt Rigi, Mt Pilatus or Mt Titlis) is more doable on the same day when we arrive in Lucerne from Interlaken. We will probably arrive in Lucerne before noon time. Plan to check-in first then out again to the mountain. Or store the luggage in the train station first.

    (2) if we want to visit 2 mountains in 1 same day, which 2 can we visit? We will be there in December so the day is short.

    (3) which 1 of the 3 mountains can be omitted if we do not have time to visit all 3?

    Thank you!

    Hello Serentee,

First of all please find lots of information and details about the three mountains you mention and the Lucerne area in below links:

    1. I would say Mount Pilatus is the best to visit on the arrival day, as it’s the closest to the city of Lucerne and due to the month you’re here you can only access it via cable car (cogwheel is not operating), which again safes time. Check the “Route” tab ob above Pilatus link for details.
Second option, Mount Rigi. Mount Titlis is the furthest to reach from Lucerne.
http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/mt-pilatus-and-mt-in-one-day-possible, whereas you would go up and down Mount Pilatus from Kriens.

    2. It doesn’t make so much sense running around trying to visit two mountain peaks in a day, but if you start early enough any combination is possible. Use the timetable provided below to calculate traveling times for any combination you consider:

    3. In winter I would recommend to skip Mount Pilatus, if any, as the Golden Roundtrip is not running (because of the cogwheel) which makes it less spectacular, my opinion.

    Best,
    Steph

    Hi Steph,

Thanks for the rich & detailed information & advices. They help a lot in finalizing my itinerary in Lucerne.

We plan to visit 2 alps in 1 day as we are staying in Lucerne for oni 4 days 3 nights. Our initial plan was to visit an alp a day. But this give us little time for the city. So it will be good if we can hv a free & easy day to just relax in the city & enjoy the beauty of it.

Hi, so cogwheel is not opened in December what is the alternative to go there?

Some people spend hours on those mountains, in a free and easy fashion. Other go there, salute the altitude marker and turnaround. You can make that choice. The links were provided by Steph

The timetable, linked by Steph, gives you guidance.

I mean we will still take the boat/train to Alpnachstad right? But what is the alternative to go up from there if the cogwheel is close?

    Thanjs Slowpoke!

Yes I have read the links.

Please correct my understanding if it’s not correct. So there is only 1 way up and down Pilatus from Kriens when the cogwheel is close without the boat trip as well?

    Correct

    This map may help:

    map.search.ch/?pos=665056,206272&z=32 &poi=bergbahn,zug

Zoom in and out. Move down for Alpnachstad.

By the way, it is Titlis, not Titis.
