Visit to Lausanne area or Lugano area?

If I had to choose from one of these areas to visit on my trip what would you suggest? Oct. 10, 2015 arrival date. Is there a good home base to visit both? We will be headed to Lucern area after this part of trip.

Both areas are wonderful. Both have lakes. Lausanne is French speaking and so is the culture/atmosphere. Lugano is Italian like. Picking one over the other would depend on what you're interested in. They're too far away from each other to have one base and do day trips to both.
