Short summary – read this first

A traveler named DebbieM is planning a trip and is unsure whether to visit Lausanne or Lugano before heading to the Lucerne area. She seeks advice on which area to choose and if there's a good home base to explore both locations.

Key takeaways:
  • Lausanne has a French-speaking atmosphere and cultural vibe, while Lugano offers an Italian-like experience.
  • It's too far to use one base for day trips to both Lausanne and Lugano, so choose one area to focus on.

If I had to choose from one of these areas to visit on my trip what would you suggest? Oct. 10, 2015 arrival date. Is there a good home base to visit both? We will be headed to Lucern area after this part of trip.

    Hi DebbieM,

Both areas are wonderful. Both have lakes. Lausanne is French speaking and so is the culture/atmosphere. Lugano is Italian like. Picking one over the other would depend on what you’re interested in. They’re too far away from each other to have one base and do day trips to both.
