What are hiking conditions at Schäfler in May

Short summary – read this first

Marshall is visiting Switzerland from May 14-23 and plans to hike up to Schäfler in Appenzell. He wonders if there will be ice or snow during that time, as he has experience hiking but is not familiar with using technical equipment like spikes or crampons. It’s recommended to check the weather and trail conditions before heading out.

Key takeaways:
  • Check the weather forecast and mountain webcam for updates before hiking.
  • Be cautious as some trails may still be closed in May; verify this on the official trail website.
  • As experienced hikers, you should be fine on narrower parts of the trail, but take care while navigating.

    Hello!

I am traveling to Switzerland from May 14-23 2022. We hope to hike up to Schäfler in Appenzell sometime during our trip. Is there likely to be ice or snow on the ground during mid to late May? We are experienced hikers in non-snowy conditions, but do not have experience hiking with technical equipment such as spikes or crampons. Thank you!

    Hi Marshall,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

I’m pretty sure there won’t be snow up on Schäfler in May. But you never know, always check the weather forecast and the mountain webcam before you go. I haven’t been on this trail yet, it looks a bit dangerous as some parts are very narrow with cable rails to hold on to. But it’s probably safe enough for experienced hikers.

    Happy trails and regards,

    Anna

It’s doubtful, but there is a small possibility that the path will still be legally closed to walkers (I’ve experienced this locally in Switzerland in Spring – it means rescuers / insurance would not necessarily be valid if you walked on a path even though it was officially closed.

However, I notice Schäfler has a detailed website and I’m sure an email query would be answered
