Hello,

My wife and I will be spending the last two weeks of August in Switzerland.

We will be spending the 1st week in the Haslital area with other family members and will, throughout this time, have a rented car and be using the Haslital pass.

During the 2nd week we plan to start Hiking from Meiringen over to Grindelwald, maybe do the Schynige Platte to Grindelwald Hike while there, from Grindelwald to Lauterbrunnen with an ascent to the Jungfraujoch on the way, on towards Murren and Trummelbach Falle before returning north to Lauterbrunnen. On all of these routes we will probably be using the services of either train, cable car or both.

During the rest of our stay we plan to visit any or all of Bern, Luzern, Basel and Zurich, from where our flight leaves.

It seems logical to purchase a local pass similar to the Haslital one, but I understand there are two options: the Berner Oberland Regional Pass or the more specific Jungfraubahn pass. We will also be needing a Swiss Rail Pass for the rest of out trip as mentioned above (Swiss Pass/Flexi-Pass/Half-fare/etc.).

Which combintaion of tickets will be the best for us considering both our hike in the Jungfrau area and the rest of our trip later on?

Thank you very much for your help,

Gidi Hubbert.

Hello Gidi Hubbert, and welcome to the forum! You're right, both the Regional-Pass Bernese Oberland and the Jungfrau Railways Pass are an option for your stay in the Bernese Oberland during the 2nd week. The Regional-Pass would be a better choice, as it also covers parts of the route from and to Bern, Lucerne and Zurich. You wouldn't need an additional national rail pass in that case. The link to the overview of validity (at the bottom of the Regional-Pass page) provides more information.

Another option would be to purchase a Swiss Half Fare Card for the 2nd week, instead of a Regional-Pass. It provides a 50% discount on trains and cable cars in the Bernese Oberland and on your trips to Bern, Lucerne, Basel and Zurich. Calculations would have to show which option is better. By the way, combining both wouldn't be economical.

Does this help you decide? Best regards,

Hi Annika,

In view of your suggestions, wouldn't it be best to purchase the month-long-valid Swiss Half Fare Card for the length of our stay instead of the Haslital pass for the 1st week, especially considering we will have our own transport during that 1st week?

As an extention of that question and considering the rented cars, wouldn't the Swiss Half Fare Card be a better option for the rest of our family for the single week they'll be staying in Haslital too (as only some of the getting around will be done by public transport and the rest on our own)?

Hello Gidi Hubbert. Yes, it's definitely an option to use the Swiss Half Fare Card only for all members of your group, and not to purchase the Haslital pass at all. The Haslital pass is especially economical if you plan to make very intensive use of the public transport in that region on a few days, as this pass does provide free traveling in buses, trains, cable cars and the boat over lake Brienz (whereas the Swiss Half Fare Card provides discounts). But if you'll be making (parts of) your trips by car as well, it may be better to use the Swiss Half Fare Card only.
