First, thank you for your patience in answering my question. I have no experience whatsoever with trains of any sort and hope to feel some confidence when I step off the plane in Zurich for my first holiday in continental Europe. I will be hiking in the Lauterbrunnen region and lodging in Murren for four days. I feel that the BO regional pass may be best because I plan to use many cable lifts and trains in and around the valley. It looks as though I will need to purchase a separate ticket to get myself from Zurich airport to Lucerne. From Lucerne onward to Murren it seems that I would be covered by the BO regional pass. Is this correct? After leaving Murren I will travel to Oberstdorf Germany and will purchase train fare from Lucerne onward to Oberstdorf.

Again, thank you for any help. I’m very much looking forward to visiting your special part of the world.

    Kind regards,

    Mark

Hello Mark and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

We’re here to answer questions, that’s the whole idea! So you’re very welcome! 🙂

You assume correctly, your Regional Pass Bernese Oberland will cover the journey from Lucerne to Murren, as you can clearly see in the map in below link:

For the ticket from Zurich Airport to Lucerne I recommend taking a regular ticket, as it will be the cheapest option for you. The cheapest option, the supersaver ticket mentioned in below link is NOT recommendable if you’re arriving by plane, as it’s the only option bound to a specific train, all other tickets are open for the date and route.

Thank you Steph for helping me make sure I understood correctly and for the links you suggested. I’ve always used car hire on other hiking vacations as it’s often the only option but the Swiss rail system and that of Europe in general seems to be a great option. My goal is no car hire this time and if I can become comfortably familiar with Swiss rail it’ll be great for the many Alpine adventures to come. 🙂

    You’re very welcome!

You will be more than happy leaving the car in the garage and travelling by train in Switzerland, it’s handy, comfortable, easy and simply the best way to get around. See below article for some reinforcement of your thoughts:

    Hello again,

I’m pleased to report that I’m the happy holder of a Bernese Oberland regional pass. I did think of another rail item with which your advice would be very helpful. When I leave Lauterbrunnen en route to Oberstdorf Germany, my BO regional pass will get me to Lucerne. I was thinking I would then stop by the rail ticket desk in Lucerne and ask for assistance in sorting the passage on to Oberstdorf and buy the ticket there in Lucerne. Is this a logical approach? My assumption is that someone would be available in Lucerne to help me get it sorted. 🙂

    kind regards….Mark Allen

    Hi Mark Allen,

yes, that is correct, from Interlaken to Lucerne you can travel with the Regional Pass Bernese Oberland for free.

You can buy your ticket in Lucerne at the station as you’ve just said. They are open usually 7 am-9 pm on weekdays and until 8 pm on weekends. You can buy your ticket online too, here are a list of reliable resellers: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/germany/pri ce In this case you should not worry about the tickets anymore, just enjoy the train route.
