What to expect around Lake Lugano?
The southern part of the canton of Ticino is dominated by Lake Lugano (Lago di Lugano). There is a lot of sunshine on average. The Mediterranean climate results in mild winters and warm summers.
We think the best times to visit the Lake Lugano region are late March to early June and early September to late October. If you like warm weather (27 °C average maximum), then June to August is fine as well.
Interestingly, 1.6 km2 (0.6 sq miles) of the region is Italian territory. The town Campione dʼItalia on Lake Lugano is entirely surrounded by Switzerland.
Where to stay?
Lugano is an attractive busy city right on the lake, with countless shops, restaurants and hotels. If you like a lively, central base with perfect train connections, then this is the place to be. Other towns of some size are Chiasso and Mendrisio.
If you prefer smaller villages, you'll find several of them on the lake. Examples of villages with train stations are are Ponte Tresa and Melide. Some villages without a train station are Castagnola and Morcote.
The scenery
The lake is surrounded by steep forested mountains around 1000 m high. The highest peak in the area is Monte Generoso (1700 m). In general there are lots of colorful flowers and quite some palm trees.Must do's in the Lake Lugano region
A trip up to Monte Generoso is recommended, as that gives you an overview of a huge area, as well as a very nice train ride. A boat ride on Lake Lugano is very much worth it.
If arrival or departure via the Gotthard Panorama Express fits your itinerary, then be sure to include that too.
Don't have much time? You can do a one-day Ticino trip to see the highlights.
