Do you recommend Wengen or Grindelwald as home base for 3 days? We will have a Swiss Pass and plan to do as much as possible in our 3 days in the area.

Hi Debbie,

Grindelwald is bigger and has more facilities. Wengen is car-free. They are both stunning in their own ways. It’s really a personal choice. From both villages you’ll have access to highlights such as Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn.

P.s. I think you mean Swiss Travel Pass – not Swiss Pass.

Hi Debbie – as Slowpoke says everyone has their own preference re. Grindelwald or Wengen. We spent a wonderful nine days using Grindelwald as a base in September. From there we did the Schwarzwaldalp Meiringen and Four Passes bus trips and some great easy walks – Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg, Allmendhubel to Gimmelwald, First to Bachalpsee. On the cloudy days we went for boat rides on Lakes Thun and Brienz and walked from Faulensee to Spiez. So much to see. We stayed in a nice apartment booked through E-Domizel. Thanks to MySwissAlps contributors for all the above information.

When in June?

It makes a lot of difference as the climate and weather change over the month. Early June has lot of snow on the trails, and many but not all tourist facilities are shut down

By the middle of June, and definitely by the end, trails such as Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg are open. That one usually opens on about the 15th, plus or minus several days depending on snow pack.

The floor of the Lauterbrunnen Valley is usually in good condition for walking during May….maybe late May and after. The waterfalls will be at their peak from snow melt in June.

The hotels and restaurants open up as June proceeds.

You can have some beautiful days in any part of June.

Plenty to do for 3 days, but check out schedules of individual trips if you plan to use the cableways. I think that the one from Wengen to Männlichen is open at the very end of May, for example. Nice views from up there, and a nie place to have lunch.

Schilthorn and Jungfraujoch access will be running.

Glad you like it.

You will get almost that identical view if you go to the lookout out at the church at the northern end of the village, or if you stay at the Hotel Bellevue.

It did take a few visits to get a day that was clear way back in the valley…tends to be hazy there. Maybe 8 or a bit more km.

You also get it, briefly, as the train climbs into Wengen from Lauterbrunnen. Sit on the right.

Here are directions for getting to that lookout mentioned by Slowpoke. It is about a 5-10-minute walk from Wengen station.

From the station, head left up the main street lined with shops and hotels (Dorfstrasse), past the Hotel Silberhorn on the right, Männlichen cable car on the right, Hotel Bernerhof on the left, and uphill a bit past the Hotel Schönegg on the right and a chemist on the left. At the top of the hill, you will see a path on the left leading to the Swiss Protestant Church, where there is a lookout and seats.
