Regional Pass Lake Geneva – Alps map 2023-2024

How the map works

  • As explained on the map, the red lines allow free traveling on the free travel days and 50% discounted traveling on the remaining days.
  • The black lines allow 50% discounted traveling on all days.
  • The dashed lines offer a varying discount (usually less than 50%).
  • Urban transport in towns along the red lines (e.g. Geneva, Montreux and Vevey) is free on the free travel days. An exception is Lausanne, where only the metro to Ouchy is included. The bus from Vevey to Villeneuve is not included either, but the train on that route is included.
  • Traveling with the Regional Pass Lake Geneva applies to all trains that operate on the indicated lines and that are listed in the timetable. The train type (InterCity, local, panoramic) and the operating company do not matter.

How does the Regional Pass Lake Geneva-Alps work?

On the free travel days, you can travel as much as you like on the lines that allow free traveling. You do not need tickets. On the remaining days, and on other lines, you need to buy a discounted ticket.

What you’ll receive when ordering a Regional Pass Lake Geneva-Alps

You don’t receive a pass, you will only receive a purchase receipt with these details for each traveler:

  • reference number;
  • first name;
  • last name;
  • birth date.

You need these details to get day tickets for each day you want to travel for free.

How to select your free travel days

This is how you pick a free travel day:

  • Log into the website https://activateyourpass.com using the details on your purchase receipt.
  • Select a date from the calendar.
  • Select one of the below options to get a day ticket:
    • Print ticket: this will download a pdf document with your ticket. We recommend this option because you can store the document on your phone (or tablet) just like any other pdf document, and show it on request. This works even when you are offline. You can print the document, but that’s not required.
    • Add to wallet: this adds the ticket to a wallet app. This normally also works when offline.
    • Show ticket: this shows the ticket but does not store it anywhere.

Obtain your day ticket before you start traveling, not when you’re already on board. You can cancel a day ticket until the day before it is valid. I advise obtaining your day tickets in the evening or the morning prior to traveling. That way you minimize the chance that your travel plans change.

If you do not have internet access while traveling, be sure to obtain your day ticket before you leave your accommodation, so you can log on via the Wifi there.

If you have a paper pass, you’ll need to write the date of the free travel days in the designated area.

How the Regional Pass Lake Geneva-Alps free travel days work

The free travel days can be used as you like, either consecutively or non-consecutively. For example: with a 5-day pass, you can enjoy free traveling on days 2 and 4, and discounted traveling on days 1, 3, and 5.

Seat reservations

You do not need seat reservations for 99% of all trains and buses in Switzerland. You can just board with your pass.

A few of the GoldenPass trains are an exception. If you need seat reservations, you have to arrange for them separately. Seat reservations are not included in the pass.

What to present to on-board staff

Personnel can check your tickets. This is what to show:

  • On free travel days: show your day ticket.
  • On discounted travel days: show your discounted ticket and the Regional Pass purchase receipt (there is no actual pass to show).

The staff may want to check your passport as well, to make sure you’re the owner of the presented pass.

My personal favorites with the Regional Pass Lake Geneva-Alps

  • The cogwheel train to the viewing point Rochers-de-Naye is included for free.
  • The train to the forested hills of Les Pléiades is free.
  • Boat trips on Lake Geneva are included. I’d recommend the eastern part of the lake for the best views.

Page author: ArnoI have visited Switzerland countless times since 1997. I've explored most of the country, but find myself staying in the Bernese Oberland and Graubünden most frequently. The alps and the rail network remain very impressive, even after all these years.
