Hi there,
We need to have some advices about accommodation as below:
1). We will be having Christmas countdown in Luzern. Shall we stay in old town or Luzern Metro area better for our countdown day? We are going to stay at Luzern. We are considering either Altstadt Hotel Krone or Waldstaetterhof Swiss Quality Hotel.
2.). We are planning to visit Jungfrau. Shall we stay in Interlaken or Grindelwald for one night stay?
3.) Any recommendations for the hotel in Zurich for our last night stay before departure to airport?
Hope to receive some advices.

Hi Evepym-

How many days or hours will you have in the Luzern area?
I am confused about your questions.
You ask if it is better to stay in Luzern or in the Luzern Metro area, but then you tell us that you are going to stay in Luzern city. I do not understand. Why ask, if you have made up your mind?
Either one is better for some people. And, to add to the choices, when I visit Luzern, I sometimes stay in neither one, choosing to use the superb rail system to get me in and out of the city.
Further, “better” is an elastic term, whose definition varies from person to person.
What do you mean by better? Cheaper? More luxurious? Better views? Restaurant? What is better for you?

I always stay at the Adler. It matches my needs. Other hotels have a different balance of benefits and disadvantages.
It would help us make suggestions if you gave us your flight departure time.

Nice to hear you’re coming to Switzerland around Christmas!
As slowpoke says, the public transportation in Switzerland is so well organised, that it actually doesn’t really make a difference if you decide staying in the town centers or in the “suburbs”, let’s say! You can make that quite dependant on budget and likes of the accommodation.
To check out traveling times to the outskirts of Lucerne (and also Zurich), use the advanced timetable in below link. Make sure you read first how it works, it’s a fabulous tool for planning:
– http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metableBtw, both the Altstadt Hotel Krone and the Waldstätterhof are located right in the city center of Lucerne.
Both Grindelwald and Interlaken are beautiful bases to visit the Jungfraujoch and you can also visit the other one, wherever you decide to stay.

Check the Hotels tab on both pages for accommodation recommendation

We will be arriving Lucern on 23rd Dec at 3pm as mentioned above for preparing Christmas countdown day. Meaning that 23rd & 24th are staying in Lucern.
Then on 25th Dec morning is going to visit Jungfraujoch. Just not too sure shall we stay in Interlaken OST or Grindelwald as we are carrying huge luggages along on 25th Dec.
On 26th Dec is leaving to Zurich for a night stay before taking plane to home.

<<“We will be arriving Lucern on 23rd Dec at 3pm as mentioned above for preparing Christmas countdown day. Meaning that 23rd & 24th are staying in Lucern”>>
From the perspective of the festivities and surroundings, it will be a lot more convenient to stay in Luzern itself. Possibly, you could leave some of your luggage at Luzern Main Station, so that you would not have to take it to the hotel and back.
And,you might take only light luggage to the Jungfrau region, if you choose to ship some to the airport rail station, or to Zürich main station. Most likely to be shipped on the 24thfor pick up the 2nd day after you ship.

http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/luggage-storage-option-in-lucerne-station
For lockers at Luzern and the other main stations:
http://www.sbb.ch/en/station-services/services/lock ers.html
For various luggage transport services:
http://www.sbb.ch/en/station-services/services/lugg age/luggage.html
And, if you search under Stations and services for an individual station name, the SBB website lists what ever storage faclities exist at that station.
From the standpoint of much lower cost and also quicker transportation to Interlaken, but not in the midst of the festivities in the city, I’d consider a station along the line from Luzern to Interlaken. I have recently used an inn in Sachseln which is of good quality, has reasonable prices….much cheaper than Luzern….. and 3 trains to/from Luzern every hour. The high costs of staying in Luzern are an issue for some people. The trains take either 26 or 34 minutes to make the journey. It is a bit over 200 meters from the station, which might be an issue if your luggage is considered. It is the Gasthaus Engel on the Brünigstrasse in this map.
You will also note the bus stop for the bus that goes top the station, if you need it. Mouse over the icons for information
map.search.ch/?pos=661127,191294&z=10 24
So, as you can see, if “better” means “cheaper” staying outside the city is “better.” If it means being in the midst of the festivities, it means that staying in the city is “better.” And, the SBB offers some luggage services that might help make your trip easier. Note that there are no luggage services at Sachseln station.

EvepymParticipant9 posts12 August 2019 at 2:28:31 #919779Thanks Slowpoke! Good idea to ship the luggage to Zurich main station. Can we still bring along 24” luggage to Jungfraujoch? Maybe staying in Grindelwald or Jungfrau
SlowpokeParticipant7567 posts12 August 2019 at 8:19:58 #919780Hi EvePYM-
<<“Thanks Slowpoke! Good idea to ship the luggage to Zurich main station. “>>
You can also ship to the Zürich airport station (Zürich Flughafen).
<<“Can we still bring along 24” luggage to Jungfraujoch? Maybe staying in
Grindelwald or Jungfrau”>>
Please see this link for places to stay in the Jungfrau region:
http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrauregion/hotels
Also, check each of the named towns individually…not sure if the hotel lists are duplicate entries.
You don’t have to worry about taking your luggage up to Jungfraujoch. You cannot stay overnight there. And, if you could, you might have difficulty sleeping at that altitude.
The hotels in the Jungfrau area fill up for Christmas. Book early.
You can leave luggage in lockers or at a luggage office at Grindelwald:
Note the size of the lockers (metric units) and the opening hours for the luggage office.
(Also, Lauterbrunnen has similar facilities).
