    Hi!

We will spending roughly 3 days in the Jungfrau region next week and are hoping to get some input to help finalize our itinerary.

We will be based out of Wilderswil (near Interlaken) as we would like to see Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Kandersteg (Oeschinensee). We are very active/fit and experienced hikers, and will have our dog with us.

Both the Eiger Trail and Mannlichen Panorama trail are at the top of our list, but we are wondering if the views from these hikes will be similar – should we chose to do one of these, and a completely different hike?

Here is our current itinerary. We’d appreciate any suggestions/tips for how we can improve it to see more of the surrounding area. Thanks in advance!

DAY 1 – ARRIVE: Harder Klum view point

DAY 2 – GRINDELWALD: First Cliff Walk, Bachalpsee, Eiger Trail, Glacier Canyon (if we have time)

DAY 3 – LAUTERBRUNNEN: Lauterbrunnen Valley to Stechelberg, **Mannlichen Panorama trail

**Should we switch this for a trail in Murren? eg Murren North Face Trail

DAY 4 – KANDERSTEG: Oeschinensee Lake (then depart to Zurich)

I suggest a couple of options for you:

take the cogwheel from Wilderswil up to Schynige Platte …from there, hike about 2-3 miles (in the direction of First) and turn around …the valley below, and the panorama of the Alps here, are unbelievable …on your way back, take the upper trail along the ridge line which gives you good views of Lake Brienz (you’re essentially hiking the last third of the incredible First to Schynige Platte hike)

combine your Lauterbrunnen valley and Mannlichen hikes in to one…here’s what I suggest….take the gondola to Mannlichen and hike to Kleinne Schidegg …from there take the mountain train down thru Wengen (get off and explore a little .,.there are amazing views of Lauterbrunnen Valley here, especially from the back courtyard of a nearby church) …afterwards, take the train down to Lauterbrunnen and walk thru the town and then thru the valley to Stechelberg…take the gondola up to Murren and then work your way back to Lauterbrunnen via the little mountain train and the gondola back down to Lauterbrunnen …that’s a long day but totally doable if you’re fit and have good weather ..it’s also amazing scenery …if that’s too much, eliminate the Mannlichen hike and simply take the cogwheel from Grindelwald up to Kleine Schidegg and start from there … (the views around KS are absolutely amazing!)

for what it’s worth, I’d skip the thrill walk at First and spend more time around Bachalpsee and surroundings …you’ll want to take the earliest gondola from Grindelwald to First so that you have the best chance of getting good reflections in the lake

enjoy your time …our family just got back from that area about a month ago …we loved it so much that my son and I are going back to the BO for 10 days in September !

Thank you for your suggestions! I just looked up Schynige Platte and the views from hikes in that area look incredible, especially the Panorama Trail.

Have you done the full hike from Schynige -Faulhorn – First? It looks beautiful and would go through Bachalpsee, which we had planned to do as a separate hike (First-Bachalpsee).

However it is quite a long hike from what I’ve read which, meaning we would likely have to forgo doing the Eiger Trail the same day.

The alternate option is to do Schynige Platt Panoramic Trail, then head over to First. Would we be missing out much by not doign the full hike thru to First?

We love your suggestion of turning Lauterbrunnen / Mannlechin into one hike. We werent sure if we’d have enough time to visit Murren, but it feels possible now!

Have you done the Murren North Face Trail by chance? Curious if that is better than the Eiger Trail

    Hi HikingWaffle,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

I think the Murren North Face Trail would be a good combination with the Lauterbrunnen valley hike. You can do a loop starting from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg. At Stechelberg take the Schilthorn cable car to Mürren. From Murren follow the trail to Almendhubel, then take a funicular down back to Mürren. Then you can either go back the same way via the cable car or walk across the village to the cogwheel train station at the other end. Then you travel back to Lauterbrunnen vai the train and the Grutschalp cable way. You can find the details on this route here: http://www.myswissalps.com/murren/travel

    Regards,

    Anna

Thanks for your suggestion and helpful logistical information!

I’ve been trying to find information on combining the Mannlichen Panoramaweg with the Eiger Trail, but having trouble finding information. Mostly regarding how long it would take.

Is it realistic to do First-Bachalpsee, and Mannlichen Panoramaweg combined with the Eiger trail in one day?

    Here is our new itinerary:

DAY 1 – ARRIVAL: Schynige Platt Panorama Trail
    DAY 2 -GRINDELWALD: First-Bachalpsee, Mannlichen+Eiger Trail
DAY 3 – LAUTERBRUNNEN: Lauterbrunnen Valley Trail (to Stechelberg), Murren North Face Trail

If we are not able to combine Mannlichen and Eiger Trail into one hike due to time, we are planning to do the following.

DAY 1 – ARRIVAL: Schynige Platt Panorama Trail

DAY 2 -GRINDELWALD: First-Bachalpsee, Eiger Trail

DAY 3 – LAUTERBRUNNEN: Lauterbrunnen Valley Trail (to Stechelberg), Murren North Face Trail, (head back to Lauterbrunnen to Wengen) Mannlichen – Kleine Scheidegg

Yes, I’ve done First to Schynige Platte a couple of times … it’s a long day… depending on your pace, it should take 5.5 to 7 hours … if you go to Bachalpsee and explore and do the 2-3 miles around Schynige Platte (from Wilderswill) you’ll be seeing most of the best parts of it … by the way, you can easily combine the Eiger trail with the panorama trail … after finishing the panorama trail, rest a bit at KS and then proceed to the Eiger trail … you can take a cogwheel from KS which will drop you off near the beginning of the Eiger trail … it cuts off about a mile of hiking and about 750-1000 feet of elevation gain … from that point you hike the Eiger trail down to Alpiglen where you’ll catch a train back to Grindelwald … have a wonderful time… it’s an incredible area

I think the north face trail as lovely views compared to the Eiger Trail. That’s my personal opinion. I am planning to do the north face trail in September. I read somewhere that there is a shorter loop of the north face trail if you are short of time. Anyone care to comment on that? Is there one and what do you call it?

    Hi Jasbir,

The Northface trail is indeed a scenic trail. The trail starts and ends in Murren with a distance of roughly 6.5 km. I don’t know of a shorter loop but if you want it easier, go counter-clockwise going via Almendhubel first instead of the Schilthornbahn station in Murren.

    Anna
