Preda-Bergün: the facts

  • Hiking time: 2h15
  • Difficulty: moderate
  • Elevation: 1360 – 1793 m
  • Distance: 7.0 km
  • Terrain: meadow, along railway, valley, forest
  • Region: Albula Valley (Graubünden)

About this trail

This route does not only lead you to a magnificent piece of nature but it also offers the opportunity to learn about some interesting railway construction techniques. Several spiral loops have been constructed in order to allow trains to gain height gradually before reaching the Albula tunnel near Preda. There are several bridges and tunnels as well. Information boards provide information along this Albula railway trail.

You can extend the hike by another 3 hours by continuing on to Filisur.

If you want to learn even more about the impressive Albula line, we’d recommend visiting the railway museum just across the rail station in Bergün.

How to travel to Preda and from Bergün

Preda can be reached by train from Samedan/St. Moritz and Bergün/Chur. You can also reach Preda by car via the narrow road from Bergün or from Samedan/St. Moritz via the Albula Pass.

The same trains stop in Bergün. Bernina Express trains do so too. The Glacier Express trains travel this route as well, but they only stop on request in nearby Filisur.

The hiking route

Simply follow the signs to Bergün. See the map below as well.

Page author: AnnikaSince early childhood I've been visiting Switzerland during my holidays and I just fell in love with the country. I spent many summers in the Bernese Oberland, which still feels like my second home, and then started to explore other areas. Traveling, hiking and photographing in the Swiss Alps are my absolute favorite activities.
