    Hi Nstpie,

The fastest option from Lucerne to Basel is a direct train via Oltigen and the total route takes 1 hour. If you would like to travel via ‘Rothenburg, Wahligen Nord’ it will take longer (1h 47) and you need to change trains several times. I recommend you check the timetable at http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable, use the advanced one on the right side, it will direct you to the SBB timetable. Also on this page, you can learn about how to use the timetable, if you are in doubt. Use ‘Rothenburg, Wahligen Nord’ as a via-station.

If you are going to buy the Eurail Global Pass it gives you a 50% discount to Rigi (http://www.myswissalps.com/eurailglobalpass/validity) and also your train route from Lucerne to Basel is for free.

If you check the normal train ticket prices in the timetable, you’ll see that from ‘Rothenburg, Wahligen Nord’ to Basel has the same price as from Lucerne to Basel. (Careful, the default price is always half price on SBB timetable as you would have the Swiss Half Fare Pass, so you need to double it to get the correct amount if you do not have that pass).

Another way to save money – if you have no valid train pass – if you are buying Supersaver tickets (http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/switzerland). But be careful, Supersaver Tickets must be purchased in advance as they can run out and also if you miss that particular train, you lose your ticket. In other words, you have to travel on the chosen train, you cannot modify your itinerary.

    I hope these help,

Nstpie, so true. I also think that nowdays, a refundable hotel is a must if we plan a holiday.

Nstpie, that is so interesting! So many people connect through Disney. I have never been to Disney World without seeing people I know from Philadelphia. Like yours, our trip is in 2022. I’m not sure there are trips in July this year, but maybe.

Rkghauri, the Disney cruise is actually with AmaWaterways, but it is organized by Disney. http://www.adventuresbydisney.com/europe/rhine-river-cruise/

You may be sorry you said I could feel free to write again!!

I read the Lucerne Visitor’s Card rail pass can be downloaded and sent to my phone ( or I could print at home ) once my room reservation is paid. I’ve searched my next question before bothering you all and still don’t know the answer to this…would this pass take me from the Zurich airport to Lucerne?

    🙂

Here you’ll find all the discounts you can have with the Lucerne Visitor Card: http://www.luzern.com/en/services/visitor-card-lucerne/discounts-with-the-visitor-card/. Unfortunately, the train from Zurich or Zurich Airport to Lucerne is not among them. You need to buy a point to point ticket or you need to have a rail pass for that trip.

I hope you’ll like the Hotel Central Lucerne. 🙂

    Hi Nstpie,

I think the Zone10pass is only valid in the cantons of Lucerne, Obwalden and Nidwalden (central Switzerland) and it does not cover Basel. You would most likely need a separate ticket.

I hope your planning is going well!

    Regards,

    Anna
