Bern or Lausanne as base for excursions to Jungfraujoch, Glacier 3000?

    Hi,

I have been reading all the information and timetables I can find to figure out the best itinerary for my trip, but keep getting confused on what the best option would be. I meant to post this long ago, but work got really hectic and now I am staring down the barrel as far as time is concerned. I start my trip on the 30th of March by landing into Geneva. My wife and I have decided on visiting Glacier 3000 and Jungfrauoch as 2 of our excursions. We prefer not to do too many check-in/check-out activities, so plan to stay in 2 place. The last 2 nights (3rd April-5th April) will be in Zurich, but I need help in figuring out the best option for the initial part of the stay. I have currently planned to stay in Lausanne for this period, but it seems that doing a Jungrauoch trip from here might be difficult. Would Bern be a better option for our initial 4 nights? Any other city?

Also, what is the best travel option? Should I buy any Saver Pass/Travel Pass? In my initial research it seemed like the Half-Fare card would work best, and so I booked my train Journey from Zurich to Amsterdam with that specified as a discount option. Given that I need to get this, any advice on what the cheapest option would be is greatly appreciated. The basic plan we had in mind is below:

    30th March – Day 1 – Geneva to Base City(Lausanne/Bern/?)

    31st March – Day 2 – Base City(Lausanne/Bern/?) – Glacier 3000 – Base City(Lausanne/Bern/?)

    1st April – Day 3 – Explore base city

    2nd April – Day 4 – Base City(Lausanne/Bern/?) – Jungrauoch – Base City(Lausanne/Bern/?)

    3rd April – Day 5 – Base City(Lausanne/Bern/?) – Lucerne – Zurich

    4th April – Day 6 – Zurich – Rhein Falls – Zurich

    5th April – Day 7 – Zurich – Lindt Chocolate Factory – Zurich – Amsterdam

The plan for day 3 and 4 is interchangeable is if it makes travel cheaper/easier.

Again, sorry for posting this so late, but your help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Hi Appu512,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Bern ( https://www.myswissalps.com/town/bern/) would be a better base than Lausanne (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/lausanne/) for excursion to Jungfraujoch. On the other hand, if you are planning a trip to Glacier 3000, it would be quicker to do it from Lausanne.

I think it will depend on how much time you are willing to spend in transit.  Both would make a practical base if you are travelling with the train as they have good transport network. You can always plan ahead with the Swiss timetable: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/

Thank you so much for the response. Appreciate the feedback. Unfortunately though my wife has now decided she would prefer to do Mt. Titlis rather than Glacier 3000, so I am going ahead with Lucerne as my base.

The train trips I have narrowed down are as follows: Any help on whether I have selected the cheapest option would be great. Also, is it a good option to choose EasyRide? Can I use it as a tourist?

    Hi Appu512,

I think with the Swiss Half Fare Card you’re good to go. If you have set up the SBB Mobile App with your Swiss Half Fare Card, you can use the Easy Ride function to help you choose the best ticket option for each journey.

Let us know if you need more info.

    Regards,

    Anna

Hi Appu512! Just to make sure you’re aware of this: Supersaver tickets and Saver Day Passes (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/saver-day-pass/) are not included with the EasyRide functionality. Those can be cheaper than the “regular” cheapest option presented with EasyRide though. Please find our advice at https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/tickets/residents/.
