7-10 days Swiss hiking for beginners/dogs, in May

Short summary – read this first

Christian and Zita, a couple with two dogs, are planning a long beginner-friendly hiking trip in Switzerland for mid-May next year. They're looking for a trail of 70-100 km that’s suitable for their dogs and want to camp in tents part of the time. They seek advice on the best trails and camping options.

Key takeaways:
  • Most hiking trails in Switzerland are dog-friendly, making it easier to explore with pets.
  • Use filtering options on hiking websites to find easy to moderate trails, focusing on regional routes for longer distances.
  • Wild camping is restricted; check local regulations and opt for designated campsites along major trails.
  • In mid-May, expect snowy conditions at higher altitudes; be prepared with proper gear if hiking above 1600-1700 m.

    Hi

We are a couple with two dogs who is planning a long hiking trip to Switzerland in mid may next year. We are lost in all the possibilities and hope to have some good inputs. We are hoping to find af trail approximately 70-100 km. suitable for beginners and for dogs, so no narrow trails 🙂 We would love to see some different nature during the hike.

We do have experience with hiking but because it’s our first long trip we don’t want it to be too strenuous. We would love to sleep in a tent maybe half the nights.

Any good suggestions? We have an open mind and just want another great adventure together 🙂

    Best regards from

Christian and Zita (and doggos Chloé and Casey)

    Dear Anna

Thank you so much for your quick reply. I find it difficult to find longer trips on http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking – maybe I’m not looking the right place?

    Best wishes

    Hi Zita,

For longer trails, you might find this website useful: http://www.schweizmobil.ch/en/hiking-in-switzerland.html

If you click on the regional and national routes, you’ll find trails that can be completed over a few days. I think it might be helpful to first choose a region where you’d like to hike and move forward from there.

Let me know if you need further information.

    Regards,

    Anna

Is tenting possible along a walking trail? Or are there campgrounds near trails?

    Hi pvonk,

In general, wild camping is only allowed in certain areas and under strict conditions. http://www.myswissalps.com/campsites/wildcamping

There are various campsites along major hiking trails: http://www.myswissalps.com/campsites

Just thought I’d mention that you’re likely to be walking in snow in Mid-may, in some areas.

    Hi there,

@Lastlook, a good point of view, in May there is still snow on high altitude routes.

This year, end of May we checked a hiking route around 1800 m and everything was still under snow, like 1 meter snow. So if you want to walk above 1600-1700 m in mid-May, you might need to use snowshoes. It also depends on the weather.

Have a look at http://www.myswissalps.com/activities/snow too.
