How does the zone validity of the Zurich 9 o’clock day pass work?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is visiting Switzerland in September, starting in Zurich for a day before heading to Lucerne. They are seeking clarification on how the ZVV 9 o’clock Day Pass works and how it differs from the 9 o’clock Multiple Ticket, as they'll be using public transport to visit the Rhine Falls and Lindt Home of Chocolate.

Key takeaways:
  • The ZVV 9 o’clock Day Pass is valid for all zones from 9 AM until 5 AM the next day, but an upgrade is needed for specific city access.
  • The ZVV 24-hour ticket works differently; it is valid for 24 hours from the first use and can be for 1-2 or multiple zones.
  • You can purchase multiple journey tickets for groups, which can save money on the ZVV passes.

    Hi,

I will be travelling to Switzerland in September, and will be starting off with Zurich. I will be spending a day there before moving on to Lucerne the next day.

During my day in Zurich, I plan to use public transportation to visit Rhine falls (Schloss Lauren am Rheinfall) and Lindt Home of Chocolate (Kilchberg ZH). I have booked my stay near Zurich Wollishofen station. So essentially, my travel throughout the day looks like this:

Zurich Wollishofen -> Schloss Lauren am Rheinfall -> Kilchberg ZH -> Zurich Wollishofen.

I will be having a Half Fare Card as well. I would like to understand how exactly the ZVV 9 o’clock Day Pass works. The ZVV website (https://www.zvv.ch/zvv/en/travelcards-and-tickets/tickets/9-oclock-daypass.html) says that the 9 o’clock Day Pass is valid for All Zones and costs 13.5 CHF for Half Fare Card holders for 2nd class, but a different website on the same website (https://www.zvv.ch/zvv/en/travelcards-and-tickets/tickets/zone-upgrade.html) mentions that 9 o’clock Day Pass is valid for only Zurich and Winterthur (city and agglomeration), and will provide all-zone access if paired with a zone upgrade of 4 zones.

I’m a bit confused about this. It would be great if somebody can clarify this to me.

Additionally, I don’t understand the difference between 9 o’clock Day Pass and 9 o’clock Multiple Ticket. I assumed that the 9 o’clock Day Pass allows for multiple journeys within the valid zones and period, so what’s the point of the 9 o’clock Multiple Ticket?

Kindly let me know on the same. Thanks

    Hi Manasa,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

The ZVV 9 o’clock Day Pass is only available for all zones. This day pass is valid for 1 whole day until 5am the next day. The upgrade you mentioned in your post is applicable to the city pass (Zurich & Winterthur only).

The ZVV 24-hour ticket is available 1-2 zones or multiple zones and is valid for 24 hours from the first validation. For instance, from 11.50 AM to 11.50 AM the next day.

Both the ZVV 9 o’clock Day Pass and 24-hour ticket is available as multiple journey tickets. This is useful if you travelling in a group. You can purchase 6 day pass as multiple journey tickets at a reduced price.

You can find further information about how to get around in Zurich here:  https://www.myswissalps.com/town/zurich/#travel

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna
