Extra costs for mountains with Swiss Travel Pass?

Short summary – read this first

A couple is planning a trip to Switzerland and has questions about accessing Mount Rigi and Pilatus with the Swiss Travel Pass, alongside other activities near Lucerne and Interlaken for rainy days. They're also curious about the best route to Jungfraujoch and ticketing details for their journey.

Key takeaways:
  • You don’t need extra tickets with the Swiss Travel Pass for Mount Rigi and Pilatus, but you do need tickets for the cable cars.
  • You can purchase tickets for the Jungfraujoch on the day of travel from Interlaken OST.
  • Reservations for the cable cars and trains are usually not required, but check the weather first.
  • It's fine to buy the Swiss Travel Pass from the SBB international guest section online, as it's quick and straightforward.
  • Kids can usually travel free with a family pass, but double-check current policies.

    Hi

    Couple of questions –

    1. As I understand Mount Rigi and Pilatus would come free with Swiss travel pass (STP). Do we need any other “access pass” to get into Cog wheel train or Aerial cable for Rigi or pilatus or can we just get into it with the STP? Is any reservation required ?

    2. If we are unable to do Alps on rainy or cloudy days, could you please suggest any other places around lucerne or interlaken, I understand we can Panorama express or cruise or museums but if we like to see beautiful places, which ones would you recommend within travel distance of 1-2 hours?

    3. Which is more preferred route from interlaken to Kliens for Jungfraujoch, is it option 1 via Lauterbrunnen or option 2 via Grindelwald, can we go up one way and come down the other way ?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Pape,

    1. You won’t need to buy anything extra, but you need a ticket to access the cable cars on most mountains (bar code to open the gate). But no extra costs with Mt. Pilatus and Mt. Rigi.
    2. We have a list of activity (mostly outdoor) for each town here: Luzern / Intelaken
    3. Kleins? Both routes are great – yes go up one way and down the other to see both areas

    Hi Lucas

Thanks for your reply, when I try to book the tickets online Wengen to Jungfraujoch, I cannot see any discount option for Swiss travel pass holders, STC should be eligible for 25% discount, please refer to attached file from SBB online booking website, there is no check box for STC, though there is one for half fare card. Does it mean I cannot book it online on the web?

Secondly can you also please confirm if kids with family pass can travel free from Wengen to Jungfraujoch?

    thanks

    Hi Pape,

The SBB ticket shop is geared towards Swiss residents so does not include an option for Swiss Travel Pass. You can make reservations here http://www.jungfrau.ch/shop/e n/bergbahn/reservation /

But at this time of year reservations most likely not required AND you really need to see what the weather is going to do before committing to the trip. Unless of course you are happy to go in any weather conditions and just enjoy the train ride.

Not 100% sure about kids but I would guess yes you are OK.

    Hi Rockoyster

Thanks for your reply, however Swiss travel pass (3,,4,8,15 days) can be bought from SBB shop under international guest section of the site http://www.sbb.ch/en/leisure- holidays/travel-in-switzerland/internatio nal-guests/swiss-travel-pass.html

I hope its fine to buy from here since it is very mobile and is issued straight away without delay. Please confirm.

Thanks for the link, Secondly can the tickets for Wengen to Jungfraujoch can be bought from Interlaken OST correct on the day of travel?

How much time we should set aside up in the Jungfraujoch just in case if we decide to reserve the tickets ?

    thanks for your help.

    Hi Pape,

Rockoyster is right about the SBB website. It’s primarily for Swiss residents so it can be a bit overwhelming, and they do not take all tourist passes into account. The (much simpler) SBB tourist webshop for passes is http://www.swissrailways.com/ en. After picking a pass and filling out your address, pick “Online Ticket” from the bottom of the list. Often they will e-mail the pass within minutes or hours, sometimes it takes up to 3 business days if the travel date is not very close. Other websites selling the Swiss Travel Pass are listed here: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/price. Basically all websites sell the same pass, but these are the websites we know, and we can help you with.

Yes, you can buy tickets on the day of travel, or via websites geared to tourists; you can find them here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfraujoch/tickets

All about Jungfraujoch and how much time it takes can be found here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfraujoch

    Enjoy your trip!

    Hello Pape,

I was responding to your question which said ” when I try to book the tickets online Wengen to Jungfraujoch, I cannot see any discount option for Swiss travel pass holders, STC should be eligible for 25% discount, please refer to attached file from SBB online booking website, there is no check box for STC, though there is one for half fare card. You also asked “Secondly can the tickets for Wengen to Jungfraujoch can be bought from Interlaken OST correct on the day of travel?

    Yes you can.

The link Arno provided should give you information on how much time you need to set aside.
