28th- lucerne and mt tilis
29- zermatt- i am confused between matterhorn and gornegratt- which one is better and where can we get to play in snow
30- i really want to do glacier 3000 but i believe it too long a travel , we will have kids of 6 years, advice wheter to take this trip
31- would like to do schilthorne if ther will be snow, else we can go to grindelwald and do Mannlichen. Is the gondola free for swiss pass holder? are ther good activites for family with kids?
Thanks

It seems a shame to be based in the wonderful village of Wengen and spend so much time on trains going elsewhere when the Jungfrau Region has so much to offer.
You can’t go to the Matterhorn. You can only look at it from Zermatt, Gornergrat or Klein Matterhorn/Matterhorn Glacier Paradise.
GunzelParticipant241 posts30 April 2018 at 23:02:43 #883716I agree with rockoyster; Wengen would be a lovely base and there are several good local trips to do.
What you are proposing would be very tiring.
Consider the Bernese Oberland Pass.
I was in the area at the same time of the year in 2015 and enjoyed magnificent weather.

The key to finding out what is feasible and what isn’t is to plan your trips using the Swiss Timetable to find out how long it will take to get there and back:

(Use the one on the right with the red SBB logo.)
>> 29- zermatt- i am confused between matterhorn and gornegratt- which one is better and where can we get to play in snow
Both are beautiful; neither would disappoint. Which one is better is entirely a matter of personal preference.
Have you read these pages?
http://www.myswissalps.com/go rnergrat
http://www.myswissalps.com/kl einmatterhorn
Both should have snow at the end of May.
>> 30- i really want to do glacier 3000 but i believe it too long a travel , we will have kids of 6 years, advice wheter to take this trip
Find out how long it will take to get there and back, using the Swiss Timetable. Whether or not it is too far to travel is up to you to decide.
>> 31- would like to do schilthorne if ther will be snow
There may not be snow on the observation deck. You will be able to see snow on the surrounding mountains.
There is no snow-play area at the top station of the Schilthorn. The snow-play area is at mid-station Birg, but it has closed for the season.
>> else we can go to grindelwald and do Mannlichen
The gondola from Grindelwald Grund to Männlichen operates from 26 May 2018, but the cable car between Wengen and Männlichen doesn’t reopen until 1 June. So you can go up and back on the gondola.
>> Is the gondola free for swiss pass holder?
With a Swiss Travel Pass, you get 50% discount on the gondola from Grindelwald Grund to Männlichen.
From Grindelwald, you can get to Grindelwald Grund by train or bus.
- If you travel to Grindelwald Grund on the train, you get free travel to Grindelwald and 25% discount from Grindelwald to Grindelwald Grund.
- By bus #123 from Grindelwald Bahnhof (railway station) to the Männlichenbahn stop (for the gondola), the trip is free with the Swiss Travel Pass.
The bus timetable is here:

I agree with the others that for such a short trip, focussing entirely on the Berner Oberland Region and perhaps a day trip to Luzern is a much better use of your time than travelling so far and wide.

After your suggestion I have decide to drop the glacier 3000 for sure and will concentrate more on near by areas.
Aplenrose, thanks for the detailed reply, I am really liking the option of going for Mannlichen for a day. On checking the website I found they have something called all in one family pass for CHF 101, Can you guide me if this is for 2 adult and 2 kids total cost.
If I take the train to top if Jungfrau, there are various snow activities like snow tubes and sledges and the elevator to top, is that covered in the ticket cost or do we have to pay extra.
Gunzel like you suggested the brenese omberland pass-I checked the details for the same,
- we land in zurich, so to reach the bernese region i will have to buy tickets for zurich to bern and while going i have TGV from basel so again bern to basel ticket will be required.
- more over if i do decide to go to zermat the again from spiez i will have to buy tickets.
Can you suggest a combo that suits us best so that we can do titlis, gornegrat, jungfrau and mannlichen. For all 5 nights i am staying at wengen in chalet. Arrival at zurich on 27th and dep from basel on 1st june.
We are 2 couples with kids of 11 and 14. I was also contemplating that we take a self drive car from zurich reach laterbrunnen and park it near station, late we can use it again on last day to drive to basel. that way i save the trouble to carrying luggage throught various connections and may be save some time waiting for connections.8 day swiss pass of 398 chf can be changed to 290 approx. so thats saving 400 chf which can be used in car hire
I can also use the car to drive to zermat provided the roads are not too curvy as I have nausea if i travel by road on mountain reagions in india.
Please suggest.
Thanks in advance.
rockoysterParticipant8889 posts1 May 2018 at 21:28:55 #883719Choosing a Pass is a tricky balancing act.
You could get 8-day Swiss Travel Pass.
You could get a 4-day STP plus free Swiss Family Card for free kids travel. Then buy point to point ticket for Zurich to Wengen or Wengen to Basel (whichever is cheaper). Or Swiss Half Fare Card for whole trip?
BO Pass covers you to Brig on way to Zermatt.
You should read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass), download the handy spreadsheet calculator and do the math.
Bonus hint: before you go hiring a car read http://www.myswissalps.com/ca rversustrain.

The elevator to the Sphinx viewing terrace is free.
The Snow Fun Park costs extra:
