Swiss train pass for Lauterbrunnen, Lucerne, Milan

Short summary – read this first

A couple is planning a trip to Switzerland from December 24 to December 29, starting in Zurich and spending most of their time in Lauterbrunnen. They are looking for advice on transportation options for various activities, including visiting Schilthorn and Jungfrau, and whether to buy individual tickets or a Swiss Travel Pass for their travels.

Key takeaways:
  • Choose the Schilthorn option from Mürren, as it's cheaper; if you have a Swiss Travel Pass, Schilthorn is free.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Fare Card can save you money over point-to-point tickets, so compare costs based on your itinerary.
  • For Jungfrau, consider your route and calculate costs for cable cars and trains to see which pass works best for you.

    Hi everyone!

Me and my wife will be visiting Switzerland from 24 Dec to 29 Dec before heading to Italy on 30 Dec.

    This is our plans roughly.

24 Dec – We will touch down Zurich and stay in Zurich for one night

25 Dec – We will catch a train to Lauterbrunnen and based here from 25 Dec to 28 Dec. Between these few days, we planned for the below activities depending on weather condition:

Day 1 : Explore around Lauterbrunnen area

Day 2 – Day trip to visit Bern + Thun + Interlaken then back to Lauterbrunnen (train travels)

    Day 3 – Visit Murren + Schilthorn

Read from here this is the instruction to get to Schilthorn.

From Lauterbrunnen, you can take the cableway to Grütschalp. Then change

to the narrow gauge train to Mürren BLM, the train station in the north

    of the village.

From Mürren, you can take a cable car up to the Schilthorn. Train down to Lauterbrunnen

Question : Do i select “Mürren – Schilthorn CHF 82.60 per adult” or “Roundtrip via Grütschalp – Lauterbrunnen – Schilthorn CHF 113.80” ? Taken from this page : schilthorn.ch/en/Infos /Timetable__and__Tarif f

    Day 4 – Visit Gimmerwald + Jungfrau

Question : Quite mixed about the route to Jungfrau and whether Gimmerwald is along the way prior to going to Jungfrau or I should put Gimmerwald together on Day 2? Also, how much it cost to visit Jungfrau (train tickets + entrance fee)?

29 Dec – We will catch a train to Lucerne and stay there for a night before heading to Venice (Italy) from Lucerne on 30 Dec.

Question : Is it more economical to buy a 3 day travel pass to be used for my day 2, day 3 and day 4 trip? Or buy the train tickets + attractions tickets individually?

Hi KeepTouch and welcome to MySwissAlps!

    1. The first ticket to Schilthorn is from Mürren only. The 2nd ticket option is from Lauterbrunnen (which is further away, hence the higher cost. If you have a Swiss Travel Pass you don’t need any ticket at all as Schilthorn is free. See what else is covered here: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/validity
    2. Do you mean Grindelwald? or Gimmelwald? There is no Gimmerwald anywhere. 🙂 You can get to Jungfraujoch either via Wengen or Grindelwald (many people do a round trip to do both routes as noted here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfraujoch/gettingther e

As for the figuring out which Swiss rail pass (if any) will save you money over buying point to point tickets, you’ll need to first decide on your day to day itinerary and then find ticket prices and compare those to rail pass discounts (some trips are fully covered and others partially covered). Read though our instructional page on how to find the best rail pass for your itinerary here: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass (we even have a spreadsheet there to help with the math).

I’m certain a pass will save you money over just regular tickets. I’d focus on the Swiss Travel Pass (4 days) or a Swiss Half Fare Card (valid 30 days). Use the STP for either Dec. 25, 26, 27, 28 or Dec. 26, 27, 28 an 29 (whichever date, 25th or 29th is more expensive should be covered by the STP).

You’ll need a ticket either from Lucerne to Milan or from Chiasso on the border of Italy (if you use the STP on Dec.29). Tickets to Italy can be found here: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/italy/price

    Hi Lucas,

    Thank you for your reply.

I mean Gimmelwald for question 2… haha

Actually that I what I am doing… based on my day to day itinerary then compare the ticket prices (including the mountain visits) against rail discounts…

Just not too sure how much it cost (cableway + train) to go up to Jungfrau and Schilthorn…

    Hi Lucas,

I just used the excel calculator… it seems to be STP (3 days – to focus on my 3 days trip within Lauterbrunnen area to Jungfrau – Schilthorn – Bern&Thun) not much savings… however the half price pass seems better as it covers the whole duration of my Switzerland trip.

I have attached my worksheet here, not sure if I done it correctly.

It looks like you were taking the Swiss Half Fare Card price as the regular price on the train tickets (excecpt Schilthorn).
Be sure you are following the instructions to find the regular price on the timetable: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

The timetable will also give you prices to Jungfraujoch (any destination in Switzerland).

The Swiss Half Fare Card may indeed be the cheapest option for you.

    Hi Lucas,

You are right! I have entered the regular price wrongly… didn’t notice the price is meant for half pass.

Looks like we are getting ourselves half price pass. Thank you for your advise!

    Hi Lucas,

    1 more question!

does my 1 month half fare pass eligible for lucern-venice train ticket ordered from SBB website? I saw there is option for half fare 1/2/3 years though.
