An alternative to Bernina Express in November

Short summary – read this first

Patricia from Buenos Aires is looking to travel from Milano to Tirano in November to see the Alps, but the Bernina Express isn’t running. She wants advice on which train to take from Tirano to enjoy snowy views, especially since St. Moritz might seem dull in November.

Key takeaways:
  • You can take regular trains on the Bernina Railway from Tirano to St. Moritz to enjoy the same stunning views as the Bernina Express.
  • Consider an alternative trip from Milan to Zermatt to see the Matterhorn, which only takes about 3.5 hours one way.
  • Regular trains run on scenic routes, so you can still enjoy the scenery even if the Bernina Express is out of service.

Hi, I’m Patricia from Buenos Aires and I’m travelling to Milano in November. Sadly I’ve found out that the Bernina Express does not run on early November, and I really really wanted to see the Alps during a train trip.

So I’ve seen that there is a train from Milano to Tirano, as a first step. That I can do.

But then, what do you recommend me to do in order to have a nice view of the alps, glaciars, tunnels and snowy views?

Which train should I take from Tirano? I was thinking maybe a Tirano to St. Moritz train, but St.Moritz looks pretty “bleak” in November, moreover on a Sunday, which is the day I have to do such trip.

Is there a route that you can suggest me to see the Alps by train? I really like snowy pikes, glaciars and tunnels.

Thank you so much for your help and sorry if my English is not that good ♥

Hello Patricia from Buenos Aires and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Do I understand that this is a day trip from Milan?

There is no problem taking regular trains on the Bernina Railway Tirano to St Moritz. Trains run regularly and offer the exact same views as offered by the Bernina Express.

Don’t worry about the prospect of St Moritz being bleak. You might pick a fantastic sunny day.

You can get from Milan to Zermatt and see the Matterhorn in 3 and a half hours one way so that’s an alternative for you.

    Your English appears perfect.

    Enjoy.

The alternative to the Bernina Express is the Bernina Express!

It is important to understand the difference between the ‘Bernina Express’ and the ‘Bernina Railway’. The Bernina Railway is the (originally independent) railway line from Tirano – St Moritz – Tirano. It became part of the Rhätische Bahn* (RhB) in 1943.

The Bernina Railway itself does not connect to Chur

It has regular ‘normal’ train services

You don’t need them as the normal coaches give the same views, but panoramic coaches are attached to some ordinary trains in the off season, for example the 09.41 from Tirano

    Hi patriciaevel!

You can pretty much follow any of the scenic train routes without actually using the panoramic trains. So if a specific train doesn’t run because of low season, regular trains will usually be available, allowing you to still enjoy the route. The differences are explained under “Regular trains versus Bernina Express” at http://www.myswissalps.com/be rninaexpress. Other scenic rail routes are listed at http://www.myswissalps.com/ac tivities/scenictrips/t rain. The timetable at http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable will allow you to plan your trips.
