Zurich airport to Interlaken West – which side of the train to sit

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Pallen wants to know which side of the train to sit on for the best views during their trip from Zurich to Interlaken. They are considering both the fast route via Bern and the scenic route via Luzern, needing advice on which side to choose for each leg of the journey.

Key takeaways:
  • Sit on the left side of the train when traveling from Zurich to Luzern to enjoy views of Lake Zürich.
  • For the section from Luzern to Interlaken, sit on the right side initially, then switch to the left at Meiringen for the best views for the rest of the trip.
  • Consider taking the scenic GoldenPass route via Luzern for a more picturesque experience.
  • If you have extra time, the Luzern route is recommended as it is more scenic overall.
  • Look into getting a Swiss Travel Pass for convenient travel across Switzerland.

    Hi Pallen,

It depends on which route you take.

The fastest, less scenic route is via Bern. For this route, the only particularly scenic part is the final 30 minutes, when you travel along the shore of Lake Thun. For this part, sit on the left.

The slower, more scenic route is via Luzern. From Zürich to Luzern, sit on the left to see a bit of the Zürichsee (Lake Zürich). From Luzern to Interlaken, sit on the right. The train will reverse direction at Meiringen, and you will then be on the left-hand side of the train, but this is the best side for views for the rest of the trip, so there’s no need to move to the other side of the train.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Pallen,

In addition to Alpenrose’s helpful reply.  The section Lucerne-Interlaken is actually part of the scenic GoldenPass route.  All explained in the attached link:

    Kind regards,

Hi Pallen! As mentioned, there are several ways to get from Zurich Airport to Interlaken, so it depends on which route you choose. They’re explained in detail here: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-guide/interlaken-zurich/.

If you have an extra hour of transit time, I’d recommend the route via Luzern, and follow Alpenrose’s advice above. It is much more scenic.
