Berner Oberland Pass vs Jungfrau Travel Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to the Jungfrau area in December for two days with their two kids. They are seeking advice on whether to choose the Jungfrau Travel Pass or the Berner Oberland Pass for their itinerary, which includes visits to Lauterbrunnen, Jungfraujoch, Murren, and Gimmelwald. They've calculated ticket costs and ask if their figures are correct and if they need a pass for winter travel.

Key takeaways:
  • The Berner Oberland Pass and Jungfrau Travel Pass are not valid in winter, so consider the Swiss Travel Pass which is valid year-round.
  • With the Swiss Family Card, children can travel for free with a valid Swiss Travel Pass.
  • If traveling frequently in the Jungfrau region, the passes can offer convenience but check each pass's specific area coverage.

Hi, I’ll be visiting Jungfrau area on Dec 2023 . We are 2 adults & 2 kids (age 14 and 12).

I’m planning for 2 days in this area (we will stay in Beatenberg), and we will have Swiss Half Fare Card:

    • Day 1: Visit Lauterbrunnen, Jungfraujoch and go back to Grindelwald using Eiger Express
    • Day 2: Visit Murren, Gimmelwald, and surrounding

I’m thinking to get either the Jungfrau Travel Pass (3 days) or BOP (3 days). Which is better to get?

I’ve asked BOP , and they mention that I don’t need to get child tickets for BOP if we have the Swiss Family Card. So the cost for 2 adult 2 kids would be:

    • BOP 3 days: 2 x CHF150 = CHF300
    • Jungfrau ticket Eigergletscher: 2 x CHF99 = CHF198
    • TOTAL: CHF498

For Jungfrau pass, is the Swiss Family Pass doesn’t give free travel for the kids, so we still need to purchase child tickets:

    • Jungfrau 2 days: 2 x CHF145 + 2 x CHF30 = CHF350
    • Jungfrau ticket Eigergletscher: 2 x CHF63 = CHF126
    • TOTAL: CHF476

May I know if the above calculation is correct? Or do I miss out anything?

I thought the Berner Oberland Pass was only available for travel during the summer months (Apr-Oct).

    Hi pipinana,

Your calculations are correct. This based on having the Swiss Half Fare Card which costs CHF120 each, so you’ll need to add a further CHF240 to the above.

Much of your travel is in the Jungfrau region so I’d say that the Jungfrau Travel Pass, plus Swiss Half Fare Card is probably sufficient. That said the Berner Oberland Pass covers a much larger area. It maybe worth paying the little extra in case plans change whilst you are here? There are additional benefits with the Berner Oberland Pass. You can take a look in the below link.

Also, you’ll find with the Berner Oberland Pass, your transport from Beatenberg is covered to Lauterbrunnen for example on day 1.

Good luck with deciding. Purchase options for the passes can be found here:

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Thank you amcintosh12,

Yes, that’s correct. The Berner Oberland Pass is only valid during the summer season from 1 April – 31 October 2023.

Pipinana, apologies for that. Similarly the Jungfrau Travel Pass is only valid till 5 November 2023. On this note you may want to take a look at the Jungfrau Hiking and Sledging Pass which is valid for the winter, 1 December to 30 April 2024.

or even the Swiss Travel Pass: https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass (valid all year round).

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

Hi Yolanda & amcintosh12, thanks for your replies.

Oh noooo….. I just realized that BOP and Jungfrau Pass is not available on winter. Oh no! In that case, do you recommend us to get any pass? If let’s say we get Savers Day Pass, would it cover the cable cars etc too, especially in Jungfrau region? As there are few cable cars and it’s very troublesome to purchase tickets individually..

We’ll have few days in Switzerland:

    • 1 day in Zermatt
    • 1 day Visit Lauterbrunnen, Jungfraujoch and go back to Grindelwald using Eiger Express
    • 1 day Visit Murren, Gimmelwald, and surrounding
    • 1 day taking GoldenPass Express & explore Montreoux area

    Hi pipinana,

With regard to a Saver Day Pass, these do not cover mountain transport in the Jungfrau region I am afraid. If they are available for your date of travel, it could be great value (combined with the Swiss Half Fare Card) for your longer trips from Zermatt to the Jungfrau region and your GoldenPass / Montreux plans. Take a read of our handy link to the Saver Day Pass, it explains all about its coverage, how to use, where to buy etc:

All details for a ride on the GoldenPass route can be found here:

Given your plans, the Swiss Travel Pass I mentioned earlier could be the way forward. It’s very practical and convenient and covers all of Switzerland, including the GoldenPass. (In the case of mountain excursions, you will need to buy a discounted ticket. Some of the cable cars actually require you to have an access card to board a cable car even if a rail pass covers the journey, so you’d need to approach the ticket office anyways).

Here’s the validity map for the Swiss Travel Pass so you can research what is included and where you’ll need to buy a discounted ticket:

If you want to be sure of the best rail pass based on your plans, you may want to carry out some maths via our “how to choose a rail pass” link: https://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass

    Hi Yolanda,

Thanks again for the reply. If let’s say I go with Swiss Travel Pass, I’ll get Swiss Family Pass so my kids can travel for free, correct? If I purchase for 4 days, does that mean they can travel for free (with us) for 4 days only? Or can be for other days that we’re still in Switzerland but without the Swiss Travel Pass.

    Hi pipinana,

With the Swiss Family Card, your children can travel along for free as long as you are travelling with a valid Swiss Travel Pass or a Swiss Half Fare Card. You can find information on how to use the Swiss Family Card here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swissfamilycard
