Bernese Oberland Hiking Itinerary Help

Short summary – read this first

A couple of friends in their mid-20s are planning a weekend hiking trip in the Bernese Oberland. They want to hike from Grindelwald to Wengen, Wengen to Lauterbrunnen, and Lauterbrunnen to Kandersteg, and they're looking for advice on whether these hikes are feasible in a day and transportation options from Kandersteg to the airport.

Key takeaways:
  • Hikes from Grindelwald to Wengen and from Wengen to Lauterbrunnen are both manageable day hikes, especially if you start early.
  • Consider using the Swiss Travel Pass for easy access to trains and gondolas around the Bernese Oberland.
  • For great views, look into hiking from Schynige Platte to First; it’s about a 6.5-hour trek with significant elevation gain.
  • Plan your hikes before snow closes high alpine trails, usually around late autumn.

Two friends and I (mid 20’s, in very good shape, not much hiking experience) are planning a weekend trip to do some hiking in the Bernese Oberland. Here is our itinerary so far:

    Day 1: Grindelwald to Wengen

    Day 2: Wengen to Lauterbrunnen

    Day 3: Lauterbrunnen to Kandersteg

Are these all possible to hike during the day? Also is the airport accessible from Kandersteg? Any advice would be much appreciated.

I would suggest for great views and overall experience that you consider hiking from Schynige Platte to First on one day. Also consider Mannlichen to Eigergletcher to Alpiglen orGrindelwald via the Eigergletcher trail. You could do this last one the other way (uphill) if you want more of a challenge. If the weather is nice I think they both are world class. Lauderbrunnen or Wengen would be good places to stay for both hikes. Of course you would have to go before snow closes the high alpine trails. Mark

Both are day hikes that are easily done from Lauderbrunnen or Wengen on day 1and 2. And return to Lauderbrunnen or Wengen. SP to First is rated 61/2 hours with about 3000 feet elevation climb mostly around Fauhorn summit. You take cog train to SP and hike ends at First where you take gondolas down to Grindelwald and then train to Wengen or Lauderbrunnen. Second hike take gondola from Wengen to Mannlichen and hike ends in Alpiglen or Grindelwald and take train back. Probably takes about 6 hours but longer if you hike reverse direction uphill

You can also google Schynige Platte to First or Eiger trail. These classic hikes are described in great detail with elevation plots included on many web sites.
