    Hi Folks,

We want to take the scenic Bernina Express from St. Moritz and end our trip in Tirano. Will we have to change trains/platforms during any part of this short journey?

Once again thanks for your help.

If as I suspect you are travelling in September, the the answer is no – you don’t change trains. You want the 973 train departing St Moritz at 9:39. See timetable at http://www.rhb.ch/fileadmin/u ser_upload/redaktion/H ome_Marketing/Panorama zuege/Bernina_Express/ Fahrplaene/BEX_Europa-Zentral_DE-EN-IT-FR.pdf.

At some times of the year you need to catch a local train to join the BEX at Pontresina.

If you are doing a journey St Moritz – Tirano only then you are on the Bernina Railway for the whole trip.

If you wish, you can save on the reservation fee/supplement payable on panoramic trains by getting any of the hourly local trains on the same line.

It is important to understand the difference between the ‘Bernina Express‘ and the ‘Bernina Railway’.

The Bernina Railway is the (originally independent) railway line from St Moritz to Tirano – it became part of the RhB in 1943. It has regular ‘normal’ train services :

Like the Glacier Express, the Bernina Express is just an ‘exclusive’ set of train carriages on a normal railway route with plenty of other normal – non supplement , reservation-free trains on it.

It is debatable how much more you see from a panorama coach than any ordinary Swiss railway coach – which all have large windows.
