Best base to explore Switzerland in late November

Short summary – read this first

A couple is visiting Switzerland for the first time from mid-November to early December and seeks advice on the best towns to use as a base for exploring. They are interested in scenery, old towns, and Christmas markets but prefer to limit their luggage movement to three spots. They need recommendations for towns that will be lively during their visit.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider using Lucerne as a base for mountain scenery and exploring the Jungfrau region.
  • Montreux is a good alternative base, allowing day trips to see Zermatt and the Matterhorn.
  • Check the Swiss Travel Pass availability, as some attractions like Schilthorn will be closed during this period.
  • Try to schedule your trip for late November to early December for a better atmosphere, especially in Zermatt.

My husband and I will visit Swiss (for the first time) on 16 Nov – 2 Dec 2018. Our interests are the scenery, old towns, and christmas markets (for the last week). Any suggestions which town is the best base to explore Swiss? We prefer max 3 spots as we avoid lugging our luggage too often. Danke!

Hi Marzipanbrot and welcome to MySwissAlps!

If by scenery you are looking for mountain trips I would look at Lucerne and one of the towns in the Jungfrau region.

Do note that a lot of hotels, restaurants and shops in smaller towns close in November – as do many mountains for maintenance between the hiking and skiing seasons. For example, Schilthorn (free with a Swiss Travel Pass) is closed from 12 November to 7 December.

Montreux might be another good base town. You can also make a day trip to Zermatt to see the Matterhorn.

Hi Marzipanbrot (that’s a delicious nickname by the way ;-))! In addition to Lucas’s comprehensive reply, here are some links to Christmas market information:

    Thanks Lucas and Annika.

My husband really wants to spend some nights in Zermatt. I wonder whether it’s worth to stay. Will it be like a dead town?

it will be quiet – try to go at the end of your trip if possible. Nov.24 looks to be the start of the winter season in Zermatt.

    Bitte.

If you can I’d move the trip back (if nothing is booked yet) to arrive in late November or early December. But if the dates are set you’ll still make a good trip of it I’m sure.
