Best side on Glacier and Bernina Express
Rockoyster is curious about the seating arrangements on the Glacier Express (GEX) and how it changes direction at Chur heading to St. Moritz. They want to know if they will need to switch sides when continuing to St. Moritz after arriving at Chur on the left side of the train. Rockoyster shares past experiences with booking seats on different trains to clarify their query.
- Seats can often be switched if not reserved on the GEX and other normal trains, so feel free to move if you want a better view.
- For direction changes at Chur, you might arrive on one side and leave on the opposite side, so keep an eye out for seat allocations.
- When booking for trains like the Bernina Express or Glacier Express, remember that the seat plan indicates which side faces which direction during travel.

This is a question that comes up a lot.
MySwissAlps advice on which side to sit can be found at GEX and BEX but I know the websites say that train direction of travel cannot be guaranteed.
I only travelled on the GEX from Brig to Chur but I have been wondering if you continue through to St Moritz whether you end up effectively swapping sides. I know MySwissAlps says the train changes direction at Chur but does that mean the train go into Chur one direction and exit in the opposite direction in the same way the Luzern-Interlaken Express does at Meiringen. So, if you arrive at Chur on the left of the train do you continue to St Moritz on the right-hand side of the train?
My experience with bookings for the Bernina Express at shop.rhb.ch/en/catalog /product/view/id/18 is that the seats at the top of the seating plan are on the right heading south. The location of the driver’s seat on the BEX bus is a bit of a giveaway as to direction of travel.
Bookings for the Glacier Express at shop.glacierexpress.ch /gex_en/specials/daytr ips/glacier-express the seats at the bottom of the screen are on the right heading west to east.
Not sure if that helps or guarantees anything.
