Best Swiss town for winter activities (non-skiing)

Short summary – read this first

Katrine, a family of four, is planning a trip to Switzerland from February 14th to 18th, coming from Paris. They are looking for a good base town for activities like scenic rail journeys, dog sledging, horse sledging, and tobogganing. They need advice on whether to drive or take the train for their stay.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider staying in the Graubünden region, particularly St. Moritz or Davos, as they have good access to your desired activities and scenic trains like the Glacier Express or Bernina Express.
  • Zermatt is another great option for activities and requires a fast TGV train from Paris followed by Swiss trains to reach it.
  • Make sure to check the availability of horse sleigh rides and tobogganing in the chosen area before finalizing your plans.

    Hello,

We are a family of 2 adults and 2 children going to Switzerland from the Wed 14-18th Feb. We depart from Paris and can either drive or leave the car behind and arrive by train.

We would like to find a good base town in Switzerland from where we can drive or take a train/bus to do the following activities with the kids during our stay:

    – A scenic rail journey

    – Dog sledging

    – Horse Sledging

    – Tobogganing

    Have you got any recommendations?

    Kind regards,

    Katrine

Hi Kaki02 and welcome to MySwissAlps!

My first thought it the Graubünden region. Towns like St. Moritz and Davos have access to those activities – I’m sure there are others as well. When you say horse sledging do you mean sleigh rides?

Both towns also give you access (close-by if not the town itself) to a panoramic train: The Glacier Expressor the Bernina Express.

Both towns are easily reachable by car or train from Zurich (2-3 hours) by train.

There are some of your requested activities available in Zermatt. The Klein Matterhorn has a park with lots of activities. You just take the gondolas up to the area from the town. You can take a fast train TGV from Paris to various cities in Switzerland and then switch to Swiss trains to Zermatt. We had snowboarders and non-skiers in our group and everyone found plenty to do.
