Hike to Blausee and Oeschinensee on December 7

Short summary – read this first

April is planning a trip to Switzerland from December 6 to December 10, with a base in Interlaken. She wants to visit Blausee and Oeschinensee lakes in one day but is concerned about the difficulty of hiking from Kandersteg to Oeschinen in winter and whether it’s feasible to see both in a day. She is looking for advice on this itinerary.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider the physical demands of the hike from Kandersteg to Oeschinen, as it involves a 400-meter climb.
  • Check the local hiking maps to understand the trail conditions and altitudes before your trip.
  • Blausee can be accessed by a postal bus from Kandersteg, which offers a convenient option.
  • Be aware that some hiking paths may be closed due to the start of the ski season.

    Hi all,

I’ll be travelling Switzerland from Dec 6 thru Dec 10. I’ll base in Interaken in Day 1 & Day 2 and I’m planning to visit Blausee BE & Oeschinensee lake in one day. But I learned that Oeschinen cable car would not be operate during that period. Would it be too difficult to hike from Kandersteg to Oeschinen in winter? Would it be too rush to have these 2 spots in one day. If so, I might consider to visit Blausee BE in the morning & visit Thun in the afternoon. Appreciate if anyone can provide some insights.

    thanks,

    April

    Hi Aprilync-

    Welcome to My Swiss Alps!

<<“Would it be too difficult to hike from Kandersteg to Oeschinen in winter?”>>

“Too difficult” depends on what kind of hiker you are and what physical condition you are in.

Probably, that is too early for serious snow, but no promises.

This map gives you extensive detail of altitude and topography:

    map.geo.admin.ch/?topic=swisstopo&lang=e n&bgLayer=ch.swisstopo .pixelkarte-farbe&layers=ch.swisst opo.swisstlm3d-wanderwege&zoom=7&E=26 19931.96&N=1149297.08

It is a 400 meter climb, and the yellow color of the trail marking means that special gear is not required.

Some precautions would be in order:

    Hi April

Slowpoke has politely and clearly explained the situation.

To complement on Blausee: it can be reached by postal bus from Kandersteg. The bus stop is Blausee BE: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable.

The path might be closed because the ski season will have started and yellow ‘wanderweg’ paths may be officially closed for the winter.
