Hello!! Love this site and it’s been so helpful in planning our trip in late August 2019. We plan to spend our first night in Zurich (we arrive late afternoon from Texas) so we will need some good rest. The next day is Sunday and we will take the train (we have a 15 day Swiss Travel pass) to Lucerne and then we would like to take the ferry over to Weggis (where we will be staying 3 nights) I’ve looked at the timetables and info on a bunch of different sites but can’t seem to find out how often the ferry leaves in late August on a Sunday.

So could you tell me how often the ferry leaves from Lucerne on Sunday to Weggis?

    Thanks so much,

    Sarita

    Howdy Sarita –

Glad to have you on the Forum!

The Lone Star State is approximately 17 times larger than Switzerland, so, you are likely to find some interesting differences in geography.

The answers to your question are best found by using the timetable:

    http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

The lake boat takes approximately one hour, and leaves once per our during most of the day.

Pick your exact date, and work that timetable.

    This map may help:

    map.search.ch/Luzern?pos=674416,210728&z=32 &poi=haltestelle

I like to stay n Weggis for a variety of reasons. It is a good choice.

    Nice place.

Howdy right back at you Slowpoke. Thanks for your response. I finally could understand how to find what I needed on the link you included. Yay me!! I can’t believe Texas is that much bigger. So excited to be coming to Switzerland!! We are so looking forward to all the mountains, lakes, small towns and cool weather. We will be doing a bit of hiking and a couple of boat trips but really want to explore small towns and out of the way places.

I’ve been reading all the postings on this site for the last few months and can’t wait to get there and explore. Tell me what you like about Weggis? We love the small town feel and hope to see lots of things from this location. The next stop is Wengen for 4 nights. Then Zermatt for 2 night. Then a little place above Montreaux for 2 nights and then head to Geneva to fly out. How does that sound?

    Thanks,

    Sarita

<<“<<“! I can’t believe Texas is that much bigger. So excited to be coming to Switzerland!! “>>

I was wrong. It is only 16.86 times as big.

<<“We are so looking forward to all the mountains, lakes, small towns and cool weather. We will be doing a bit of hiking and a couple of boat trips but really want to explore small towns and out of the way places.”>

    Check this thread:

    http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/travelling-to-the-swiss-alps-in-sept-2019

If it dumps you on page 6, you’ll need to go back to the beginning.

If you really mean small towns, there are a lot within reach on a trip such as yours. Looks like a nice itinerary.

<<” The next stop is Wengen for 4 nights. Then Zermatt for 2 night. Then a little place above Montreaux for 2 nights and then head to Geneva to fly out. How does that sound?”>>

Sounds like a nice itinerary with good variety.

Wengen will be full of tourists in the last week of August, before schools reopen, beginning in September. Not a problem, just a comment. It means that all the tourist facilities will be open. I’d book early.

    Where above Montreux?

<<“Tell me what you like about Weggis? We love the small town feel and hope

to see lots of things from this location.”>>

Really nice views across the lake. Good hotels and restaurants along the lake shore. Nice walk to Vitznau and back.

Base for stays up on the Rigi, on nights when the hotel of choice is not open. A somewhat better base for an early start to the rest of Switzerland than up on the Rigi.. I’d stay a night at Weggis before or after a stay on the Rigi.

That was at the Hotel Bergsonne, now transitioning to new ownership.

    http://www.rigi.ch/Media/Rest aurants/Bergrestaurant -Rigi-Kaltbad-Hotel-Bergsonne

    See attached images

Nice for travel to places around the lake. A lake boat cruise with a nice lunch can be pleasant . If can also put you to sleep if you are jet lagged.

Here is a nice walk(s) accessible by boat:

    http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/the-swiss-path-and-southern-lake-lucerne

    Why not Weggis?

Because it adds a lot of time if you wish to travel back and forth to a major rail junction such as Luzern. And, the boats don’t run really late, so you might need to use train to Küssnacht am Rigi or Brunnen, ..then catch the lake shore bus that goes between those two places.

    Hey Slowpoke.

Loved all your pictures. We plan to go up Mt Rigi and Titlis(weather permitted) then maybe go to Schwyz or other small towns and walk around. Or hike right our of Weggis. The hotel I booked is Seehof Hotel Du Lac. Do you know it? Our plan is to try and go up the mountains early before it gets to crowded and be home in the evenings so traveling to and from shouldn’t be a problem.

The day we leave I was hoping to take the boat to Stans and then go to Hergiwil and see the glass factory and then go to Mt Pilatus until the afternoon and head to Wengen. How does that sound?? It’s a bummer that all those bratty kids won’t be in school yet. haha In Wengen we are staying at The Edelweiss.

Also we are staying at Le CouCou Hotel which is labeled as “a cool and stylish hotel above Montreaux” which is for sure us.;)

The Seehof du Lac has a good reputation, and has been there a long time. I do not have any personal knowledge of it, but I expect that you will get a good sample of Swiss hotel-keeping and hospitality.

Out of habit, I always stay at the Central am See, on the other side of the ship landing. Been going there for years. They changed hands 2 or 3 years ago, and, so far, I am still going there. The kitchen has improved with the new owners…not that it was bad before.

The lake views are about the best, because of the siting, and the terace has better lake frontage than Seehof du Lac. Seehof is set back slightly from the shoreline.

    Schwyz:

    http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/schwyz-and-the-ital-reding-house

<<“The day we leave I was hoping to take the boat to Stans and then go to

Hergiwil and see the glass factory and then go to Mt Pilatus until the

afternoon and head to Wengen. How does that sound?”>>

That’s not possible. The boats don’t have wheels. Look at places that are on the lake – Hergiswil, Stanstad, Alpnachstad. I’d check the timetable, looking at boat+train+bus combinations in the area near Stans and Hergiswil. it will be a full day. The morning may be hard to put together.

You’ll have some backtracking through Stans and Hergiswil….don’t know if they have luggage storage at those train stations, unless I check the SBB web site:

    http://www.sbb.ch/en/station-services/railway-stations/further-stations/station.8318. hergiswil.html

They break at midday… think about that when you mange your luggage.

    http://www.sbb.ch/en/station-services/railway-stations/further-stations/station.8391. stans.html

Good hours for left luggage; no lockers.

The boat landing at Hergiswil is about 250-300 meters from the ship landing.

    Boat schedules:

    http://www.lakelucerne.ch/fil eadmin/lakelucerne/con tent/Dokumente_Downloa ds_PDF/01_Fahrplan-Preise/01_Fahrplan/Sai sonaler_Fahrplan/2019/ Fahrplan_Sommer_2019.p df

There is not a whole lot of boat trafic to Hergiswil. From your side of the lake, you might change at Kehrsiten-Bürgenstock, or at Verkehrshaus, or, you might have to go into Luzern.

You might have the most flexibilty if you got to Luzern on the bus and train…..not sure. Work the timetable and the Lake Boat schedules….with a map in front of you.

<<It’s a bummer that all those bratty kids won’t be in school yet.”>>

Very few European school children, especially those from Switzerland, are “bratty.” You might wait to form opinions based on your observations before you make judgements about other nations and nationalities.

It’s just that you will be in Wengen at the busiest time of the Summer season. I go in early September. Weather on average is a little better.

In Wengen, I don’t know the Edelweiss. It’s hard to get a bad hotel there, but some are quite grand, and the views vary. Before it became apartments, we stayed at the Eiger right by the station. We tried a couple of others, and have settled on the Bellevue. Exceptional views, quite similar to the view of the LBV attached.

    http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/tips-about-wengen-and-the-jungfrau-region-by-kim

You’ll most likely enjoy the walk from Männlichen (above Wengen) to Kleine Scheidegg, in that direction. It is quite a sight to see the Eiger growing over you.

    http://www.myswissalps.com/hi king/maennlichen-kleinescheidegg

<<“Also we are staying at Le CouCou Hotel which is labeled as “a cool and stylish hotel above Montreaux” which is for sure us.;)”>>

If you were writing descriptive phrases for a hotel, would you choose to call it “un-cool” and “not styllish”? 😉

    Caux is a great location.

We stayed in Gliopn a few times, It’s nice to be up above the lake.

Went throug Caux on the way to the top. If you want “cool” accommodations, there are some at Rochers de Naye:

    http://www.myswitzerland.com/ en-us/rochers-de-naye-viewpoint-above-montreux.html

That’s just up the hill from your hotel. 😉

I thought that Arno wrote a trip report but I cannot find it.

    Hey Slowpoke.

Im sorry my sense of humor did not come through on that last post. I love children and taught school for many years as well as put together kids programs at church. I would never assume to know your culture. That’s why I want to go there so I can experience it.

The other thing is we are NOT cool or stylish (just ask our son’s) I was trying to be funny about Le CouCou in Montreax.

Thanks for the tips I will definitely look at your recommendations.

I did see the boat, bus, walk option from Weggis to Beckenrid then to Stans. From the timetable it looks like 1 1/2 to get there and has quite a number of boats leaving early. We will see how it goes. We don’t want to have a too crazy schedule.

Really appreciate all the time you guys spent helping us out.

<<“Im sorry my sense of humor did not come through on that last post. “>>

It happens to me all the time, especially on these fora. I’ve been called out a few times for slightly sarcastic comments that did not transmit well.

Humor just does not transmit through the internet. Even with emoji attached, it is still likely to misfire, and doubly so because English is not a native language for many of the posters. So, subtleties and word play just don’t work. Even my best friends in Switzerland, who worked in an English language environment, and are fluent in a few languages, sometimes get tripped up by a colloquialism.

<<“I would never assume to know your culture….That’s why I want to go there so I can experience it.”>>

If you were to do so, you’d have to come to Connecticut and be puzzled about how we Yankees do things differently. I live in the USA and am a US citizen.

If you want to learn about the Swiss Culture, which though common in many ways across the 4 national language regions, still has wide variations from region to region,

    I’d invite you to read:

    Why Switzerland, Jonathan Steinberg, ISBN0 521 48453 7, 1996.

That is the second edition, which is better for a start than the third edition, which digs a bit deeper into some of the details.

<<“The other thing is we are NOT cool or stylish (just ask our son’s)”>>

I don’t think I’d get an unbiased opinion, would I? 😉 (Note an attempt at humor).

Do you buy any chance speak German, French, or Italian…the three national languages that are widely spoken? Not needed, but useful.

Here’s an interesting comparison to Texas:

The farmhouse complex shown in “near Fankhaus” was there before the USA was settled. There are quite few family owned farms, not unlike some of the ranches in Texas, but which are mostly dairy and truck.Although you will see grain filelds, nothing like Texas or the areas around Omaha, where my daughter lives.

Images of some others are attached, but, since even today they are frequently newly built in that style, you can’t judge age by appearance.

And, the inn Bären, in Trubschachen, labeled “Trubschachen” dates back to 1356.

    http://www.trubschachen.ch/

    http://www.trubschachen.ch/le ben-arbeiten/grundversorgu ng/gastronomie-hotellerie/

    http://www.aeltester-baeren.ch/ueber-uns/aeltester-baeren.aspx

And, St. Peters Church in Mistail, near Tiefencastel, dates to the time of Charlemagne:
