    Hi,

I just purchased our Swiss Travel Pass here. We will be in Switzerland on May 26, and would like to purchase tickets for the Royal Ride. Is it advisable to book in advance? Do they sell out fast?

    Thank you,

    Maria Bonifacio

    Hi Maria!

My husband and I tried to book Royal Ride tickets online ahead of time a year ago, but were not successful, not because they sold out, but because of a glitch in the online reservation system? But no worries—we did indeed do the Royal Ride just by buying passage as a walk up last June. Turns out that not as many people want to ride on top of the cable car as we anticipated; we were actually the only ones on our trip. It was breathtaking and beautiful! I don’t think you need to book in advance. Worst case scenario, you might have to wait until the next cable car to catch your ride.

    Hi Maria Bonifacio,

You can certainly purchase the Royal Ride tickets in advance online or directly from the valley station. You can find further details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/mannlichen/tickets

    Hi EASW,
Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I was also trying to book but the system is showing an error message. I thought it was sold out. Thanks again. 😊

    Hi Anna,

Thanks for replying. I’ll try to book again. If nothing happens, I will just wait till we get there. 😉.

Lbonifa104, that sounds like the same problem I was having—it would say there were no tickets available, no matter what date I put in.

Simply wait until you are here and buy it from the train station or cable way valley station. The offer will not sell out.

As a general rule, you should not buy any mountain excursion tickets in advance as you will not know what the weather will do. In the worst case you will spend money for a trip that is ending up in fog and clouds. If you buy it on the day before or on the actual travel day you will have a clear picture on the weather forecast and can plan accordingly.

    Hi Lbonifa104,

I fully agree with Trainliner. To all/anyone planning on any mountain excursions, no matter where in the country, the general rule of thumb is to wait until the day of, to purchase any ticket (s). If you do purchade a day (or more) before, and the weather is bad, you’re basically stuck with them. So if the weather is bad, not only are you stuck with them, but it can be a complete waste of money when all is said and done. Most, if not all hotels, will have a mountain cam of sorts to see what the weather is like up above.

In the case of the Mannlichen cable car, it’s only a five minute ride to the top. I’m not sure of the price difference, but for just that short of a ride, I dont (personally) think it may be worth the extra expense.

If you are by any chance in Lucerne and able to ride up to the Stanserhorn, (free w/the Swiss Travel Pass), that cable car too, has a second deck, but at no cost at all. You travel on the funicular beforehand through the fields and some farms on a beautiful, relaxing ride on the way to the double decker cable car. Stanserhorn is open from April to November. I realize I went off on a tangent here but, Again, if you’re in the Lucerne area you may want to check it out. Have a great trip.

    Regards,

    Danielsan
