Buying Swiss Travel Pass for child below 6

Short summary – read this first

Joydeep is traveling to Switzerland with his family in the first week of May. He needs help booking the Swiss Travel Pass for his child, who is just under 6 years old, and is concerned about how to do so without running into issues. He also wants to confirm if his child can occupy a seat on reserved trains despite not having a Swiss Family Card.

Key takeaways:
  • Children under 6 years old travel for free on Swiss public transport; just show their ID during ticket checks.
  • Request a complimentary Swiss Family Card for children aged 6 to 15 to also travel for free.
  • For scenic trains like the Glacier Express, seat reservations are mandatory, even for children; without a reservation, they can sit on your lap.

    Hello,

I am travelling with my family during 1st week of May 2023. While attempting to book STP through Klook or Switzerland Travel Centre, I don’t see any option to enter details of our child who is 5 years 11 months old. Please help me understand how can I make a booking or get a family card so as we don’t face any issue.

    Thanks in advance,

    Joydeep

    Hi Joydeep,

There is no need to enter your child’s details if she is below 6 years old. All children below 6 years old travel for free on Swiss public transport. During ticket inspection, you just need to show her ID for verification. For children 6 to 15 years old, you can request for a complimentary Swiss Family Card, which will allow them to travel along for free. More details in the following links:

Thanks Anna for your quick response. I’ve another followup question, without a Swiss family card, can my child occupy a seat? We have already made reservations (Glacier express, Belle Epoque & Berninan Express) for all of us including the child.

    Regards,

    Joydeep

    Hi Joydeep,

In general, seat reservation on Swiss trains is not required. However for scenic and panoramic trains such as the Bernina Express and Glacier Express, it is compulsory to book seats in advance even for children under 6 or travelling with the Swiss Family Card. Without a seat reservation, your child can sit on your lap but this might be uncomfortable for a long train journey.
