Camping in the Zurich, Jungfrau and Luzern regions

Short summary – read this first

Jade and her husband are planning to visit Switzerland as WWOOFers on a budget, looking to camp and stay in hostels. They want advice about the legality of wild camping, especially near places like Zurich, Uetliberg, Jungfrau, and Luzern. They hope to camp without leaving a trace and seek guidance on their options.

Key takeaways:
  • Wild camping is generally prohibited in most areas, including forests; you'll need to book a campsite.
  • Check sites like myswissalps.com/campsites for available camping locations.
  • If hiking, consider exploring designated camping spots instead of attempting wild camping.

Hello! My husband and I will be visiting Switzerland as WWOOFers on a budget, and we are interested in exploring the beautiful country with a mix of staying at hostels and with camping. I’ve read mixed reports about whether “wild camping” is allowed. Is it legal? For example, if I arrive in Zurich and hike to the nearest “wild” area (Uetliberg?), could I simply find a place in the forest/field and pitch a small tent for one night? I would of course not make a fire or leave any trash, or in any way leave a trace that I was there. I am similarly wondering about whether this would be allowed in the Jungfrau and Luzern regions.

Your guidance and recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

    Jade

    Hi Jade,

Wild camping is only allowed in some areas in high alpine terrain. So, pitching a tent in the forests or anywhere else is prohibited. Please see myswissalps.com/ campsites. You will need to book a camp site.
