Do Eurail/Interrail Passes no longer cover routes to Wengen/Mürren?

Short summary – read this first

Roger is planning an Interrail trip to central Europe in autumn and is worried about changes to train routes in Switzerland. He noticed red dotted lines on the 2025 Interrail/Eurail map indicating discounts rather than full coverage, specifically for areas south of Interlaken like Grindelwald and Wengen. After some confusion, he found clarification that his routes are still covered.

Key takeaways:
  • Check the latest Eurail/Interrail validity map for accurate route coverage in Switzerland.
  • The routes from Interlaken to Grütschalp-Mürren, Wengen, and Grindelwald are fully covered again.
  • Be aware that some routes may have been discounted, but full coverage has recently been restored.

Hello everyone, but especially Moderators Arno, Annika, Anna and Yolanda.

In connection with a possible Interrail trip to central Europe in the autumn, I downloaded yesterday the Interrail/Eurail validity map for 2025.

There is a seperate detailed map inserted for Switzerland.   In the past Interrail/Eurail has given free travel south of Interlaken as far as Grindelwald, Wengen via Lauterbrunnen, and Murren via Lauterbrunnen and Grutschalp.

However, on the detailed 2025 map these lines going south of Interlaken are marked with a red dotted line.   The dotted line means ‘railway with discount’.  (My emphasis)

This would appear to be a massive change which will impact adversely on a substantial proportion of the 6,200+ members of this forum.  Has anyone seen warning notices at Interlaken Ost station telling Eurail/Interrail holders that they need to buy tickets?   (In 1972, the year the Swiss Travel Pass was introduced, I stayed in Interlaken, and I recall seeing notices at Interlaken Ost warning that Eurails were not valid on the Berner Oberland/Jungfrau group of railways.  My Swiss Holiday Pass, to give the STP its original name, was of course valid as far as Wengen, Murren and Grindelwald.)

Kind regards form a very concerned Roger!

    Hi Roger!

No worries :-). The map you’re looking at must be outdated. The more detailed up-to-date Eurail/Interrail validity map, that you can download from https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/interrail-switzerland-pass/, shows the correct coverage for the Jungfrau Region: the routes from Interlaken to Grütschalp-Mürren, Wengen, and Grindelwald are fully covered. The textual explanation on the Eurail/Interrail sites confirms this.

It’s true that these stretches have been discounted by 25% for a while, but since one or two years, they’re fully included again.
