Charles Kounen suspension bridge hike in May

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a hike from Randa in mid-May and has just 3 nights in Zermatt. They want to know if the trail to the bridge will be open and safe for hiking at that time. The advice suggests that the bridge typically opens in June, and it's better to plan for a later date.

Key takeaways:
  • The bridge and trail usually open in June, so reconsider your timing for a safer hike.
  • Check with the Zermatt tourist office for up-to-date conditions when you arrive.
  • While the trail isn't officially closed in May, hiking then could be dangerous due to weather conditions.

Hello! We are planning to do this hike from Randa mid May 2019. we only have 3 nights in Zermatt and want to optimise our chances of making the hike, depending on the weather/rain.

would the trail up to the bridge be open and accessible then? Or should we plan for a later date?

    thank you for any advice!

Hi Charmainecho and welcome to MySwissAlps!

The bridge and hike don’t typically open until June: https://www.zermatt.ch /en/Media/Attractions/ The-Charles-Kuonen-Suspension-Bridge

The later in June you can get there the better.

Hi Lucas! Thank you for your reply. I read somewhere else that the trail and bridge is open throughout the year is that true? Though it’s only recommended to hike between June – October.

    I hadn’t head it is open year-round.

The June to October dates seem like opening dates and not a suggestion. It would normally otherwise say open year-round.

In the end no one is sitting there stopping you from taking the trail but it could/would be quite dangerous to do so!

Yes I was worried it might not be safe hiking in May. Thank you again for your advice!

BEst to check in with the Zermatt tourist office when you are there to check on conditions. It could open early if this coming winter is mild or the Spring is quite warm.
