Day trip from Zermatt to Lake Como

Short summary – read this first

A traveler plans to stay in Zermatt for 7 nights in late March and is considering a day trip to Lake Como. They are confused about the long rail travel times and are seeking recommendations for a boat tour and feedback on the train journey. They are thinking of taking a 5-hour ride to the lake and a shorter return trip to Zermatt.

Key takeaways:
  • Avoid attempting a day trip to Lake Como from Zermatt due to long travel times and infrequent boats in early Spring.

We are going to be in Zermatt for 7 nights in late March and would like to take a day trip to Lake Como. I am finding rail travel times anywhere from 3 1/2 – 5 hours. We can ride the Glacier express for about 1 hour as part of the multi train 5 hour route. Then doing a boat tour for 2-3 hours on the lake. Any recommendations on a boat tour and the pros and cons of the rail ride. I was thinking of the 5 hour ride to the lake, then the 3 1/2 ride returning to Zermatt. Thank you in advance !

I strongly recommend you do not attempt this very long and complex day trip. Lake Como is the ‘wrong side’ of the mountains compared to Zermatt. Also lake boats are not frequent in early Spring season

The simplest way to see one of the Italian lakes from Zermatt is to travel to Lago Maggiore; either

    a) Zermatt – Brig – Domodossola – Centovalli (scenic train) Locarno (resort town on north east end of Lago Maggiore)

    or

    b) Zermatt – Brig – Stresa (Italy) on inter city trains and back
