Day trip from Zermatt to Montreux in Golden Pass
A traveler is planning a day trip from Zermatt to Montreux, aiming to catch the scenic Golden Pass train. They want to know if this route is the best option or if there are quicker ways to reach Montreux, and whether spending the day in Montreux is worth it instead of going to Geneva.
- Traveling from Zermatt to Montreux via the Golden Pass is scenic but will take about 4.5 to 5 hours, so plan accordingly.
- If you include the scenic route through Kandersteg, add at least an hour to your travel time.
- Consider your priorities between Montreux and Geneva, as you won't have much time in Montreux.

Hello,
To catch the Golden Pass line of trains, we have to travel to Spiez (via Brig – Kandersteg for more scenery, or direct, as suggested by Arno). Then change trains to catch the Golden Pass in Zweisimmen onwards to Montreux? Is that the best route, or are there faster ways of getting on the Golden Pass from Zermatt?
Will a plan to travel from Zermatt to Montreux as a day trip be viable or will half the day pass in trying to get on to the Golden Pass train?
We wanted to travel from Zermatt, take the Golden Pass on the way, till Montreux, spend a whole day there and then head for Geneva in the evening for the night, before leaving Switzerland the next afternoon.
Will we regret not spending that day in Geneva itself by reaching the city early? We would have toured Lucerne, BO, Zermatt by then.
Some objective and some subjective queries there, but I have faith in your suggestions, hence asked them…
Thanks again.
