Day trip from Zurich to Mt Rigi

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a day trip in Luzern on April 20 and is considering visiting Mt. Rigi using a Saver Day Pass. They want to confirm if all transportation options are available and estimate travel time to Lucerne after their visit to Rigi Kulm.

Key takeaways:
  • Check the timetable for all transportation modes to ensure everything is running smoothly.
  • Expect the journey to take around 4 hours to reach Lucerne without breaks, depending on boat connections.
  • Consider taking breaks at Rigi Kulm to enjoy the views and possibly do a short hike.
  • Both Weggis and Vitznau offer great views, but Vitznau is closer to the boat station after your descent.

We plan to spend a day in Luzern and are considering Mt Rigi. We will use a Saver Day Pass on April 20. I found a suggestion in a travel book to train to Arth-Goldnau and then use the cogwheel train to Rigi Kulm. From the top we would take the cogwheel train and cable car to Weggis and then boat to Lucerne to enjoy the town then train back to Zurich. Are all of the transportation modes open at that time? Can you give me estimate of how many hours travel this would be to get to Lucerne? Many thanks!

    Hi NancyAR,

Yes, that’s the route (or vice versa, or via Vitznau instead of Weggis). You’ll find all route details and a map here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ri gi/gettingthere. It takes about 4 hours until Lucerne, depending on the boat connection. This is without breaks. I would at least take a break at the top (Rigi Kulm) to enjoy the views, and possibly in Rigi Kaltbad as well, or go for a short hike on the mountain.

All transportation should work, there’s a timetable link on the above linked page.

For Lucerne details, please see http://www.myswissalps.com/lu cerne.

This will be a very nice day trip!

Thank you very much. So which way down provides best views, weggis or Vitznau?

You’re welcome! It’s the same side of the mountain, so no major difference. The cable car might be nice to add another mode of transport that day. But you need to walk a bit more once down to reach the boat: 10-12 minutes, versus 1 minute in Vitznau.

Thank you yes I wondered about doing the gondola. This forum has been so helpful – now I pray for 2 clear days since that’s our window!
