Visiting Grindelwald + Lauterbrunnen from Interlaken, which one first?

Short summary – read this first

Jason is planning a trip to Interlaken from August 30 to September 1, mainly for sightseeing. He is considering visiting Jungfraujoch but is concerned about the cost and crowd, so he's looking for advice on how to spend a day in Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen instead. Jason is also contemplating whether to start his trip in Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald.

Key takeaways:
  • Start your day in Grindelwald to enjoy activities like hiking or sightseeing before the crowds arrive.
  • After exploring Grindelwald, head to Lauterbrunnen to see the beautiful waterfalls, and then return to Interlaken.
  • Consider using public transport options available through the Swiss Travel Pass for convenient travel between these locations.

We have Swiss Travel Pass.  We will travel to Interlaken  and stay there from 8/30 thru 9/1.  We are mainly travel for sightseeing.

Our original plan is to spend a day to visit Jungfraujoch.   We read about Jungfraujoch is a tourist trap and quite pricy for the tickets.  Therefore, we are thinking to spend half day each at Grindewald and Lauterbrunnen valley instead.

Any suggestion how we spend the day trip to Grindewald and Lauterbrunnen valley?

    1. Should we start our day trip from interlaken to Lauterbrunnen in the morning , afterward  go to Grindewald in the afternoon,  and then back to Interlaken late evening?
    2. Or we should go to Grindewald first and then to Lauterbrunnen and back to Interlaken

We could move our stay from interlaken either to Lauterbrunnen or Grindewald.

    Thanks,

    Jason.

If you’re looking to do the Grindelwald activities (like the Flyer, zip line, biking, etc) – https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/grindelwald-first/ , I would start there in the morning, to avoid as much of the crowds as possible. I’m told it gets very crowded. Since you have to head back that way, then you can go through Lauterbrunnen and check out the waterfalls, and then back to Interlaken. Depending on when you get to Interlaken, you might be able to do a boat tour on one of the lakes.

Just my opinion.  I’m not really interested in activities like the zip line or carts, personally.

    Hi Jason,

Yes, if you have adventure activities planned at Grindelwald First then heading to Grindelwald at the beginning of the day would make sense: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/grindelwald-first/ .  Similarly if you wanted to sightsee and enjoy the views. I’d also recommend to head here first.

Afterwards, one option is to you come back down to the Grindelwald Terminal and take the gondola up to Männlichen and then the cable car to Wengen and make your way to Lauterbrunnen that way or you can always take the cogwheel train from Grindelwald (changing at Zweilütschinen).

Use the Swiss timetable to research the various options:  https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/

In case you needed any information on the above mentioned villages, you can find them all in our Jungfrau region guide below:

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Turgon,

Thanks for the suggestion.  We are not into zip line and cart either.
