Day trip to Jungfraujoch but where to go next?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Ketoeato is planning a trip to Interlaken from December 7 to December 11. They are excited about visiting Jungfraujoch and want advice on whether to stop in Grindelwald since Grindelwald First will be closed, and they seek alternative options for their afternoon schedule on December 10.

Key takeaways:
  • Definitely stop by Grindelwald; it’s a beautiful village worth visiting.
  • For a smooth trip, visit Jungfraujoch first, then Grindelwald, and finish with Wengen.
  • Make sure you know the difference between Grindelwald Terminal and Grindelwald Station for your journey.
  • If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, your ticket from Interlaken Ost to Jungfraujoch covers all routes without extra fees.

    Dear MySwissAlps members,

Our stay at Interlaken is from 7 Dec (arrival) to 11 Dec 2022 (departing).

Below is the route that we will be taking from Interlaken OST.

Bernese Oberland Railway from Interlaken OST train station (35 min) toward Grindelwald but get off at Grindelwald Terminal → At Grindelwald Terminal (not station), board the Eiger Express cable car (20 minute) →Eiger Glacier station aka Eigergletscher→ Jungfraubahn train (Jungfrau Railway) to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe (26 minutes but with a brief stop at Eismeer to look at the glacier through the glass). Journey time from Interlaken OST to Jungfraujoch is 1 hour 30 minutes.

We plan to spend 3 to 4 hours at Jungfraujoch and travel to Grindelwald after lunch. However, we noted that Grindewald First will be closed. Is worth it to drop by Grindelwald? Where else can we consider going as an alternative stop in the afternoon?

On 10 Dec 2022, we plan to visit Schilthorn (opens from 10 Dec 2022), Lauterbrunnen, Murren and Gimmelwald.

    Thank you!

    Hi Ketoeato,

Grindelwald is a lovely mountain village so yes, definitely worth stopping by. You can find more details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/grindelwald

Also you can do a round trip to Jungfraujoch, travelling out via Grindelwald then returning via Wengen. You can find information on how to plan this here: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/gettingthere

Let us know if you need more info.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Dear Anna,

Thank you for the suggestion of doing a round trip to Jungfraujoch, travelling out via Grindelwald then returning via Wengen.

    1) From Jungfraujoch to Wengen, is this the route to take? Jungfraujoch (train)–>Kleine Scheidegg (train)–>Wengen (train)—> Lauterbrunnen (train)—>Interlaken OST (end)

    2) If we are going to Wengen in the afternoon, should we visit Jungfraujoch first (be there before the big tour groups), proceed to Grindelwald village next, and then to Wengen?

    3) To visit the Grindelwald village from Jungfraujoch, do we stop at Grindelwald Station instead of Grindelwald Terminal?

    4) As the route in my original post follows the round trip (tickets from Jungfraujoch website) from Interlaken OST to Jungfraujoch, if we do a detour to Grindelwald village and Wengen, there will be additional transport fees to pay for trains?

    Hi Ketoeato,

    1) Here you’ll find how you can reach Jungfraujoch: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/gettingthere. Yes, the route you described is also an option.

2), Visit Jungfraujoch first, then if you want you can visit Grindelwald and then Wengen. Sounds good.

    3) Read about the differences between ‘Grindelwald Terminal’ and ‘Grindelwald stations here: http://www.myswissalps.com/grindelwald/travel.

    4) Yes, in case you bought a specific ticket and you want a detour, you might have to pay additional fees. You can buy the Jungfraujoch tickets here: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/tickets.

    I hope this helps,
    Ildiko

    Hi IIdiko,

On point number 4, I had emailed Jungfraujoch help desk, and asked if there will be additional costs for the two routes

Bernese Oberland Railway from Interlaken OST train station (35 min) toward Grindelwald but get off at Grindelwald Terminal → At Grindelwald Terminal (not station), board the Eiger Express cable car (20 minute) →Eiger Glacier station aka Eigergletscher→ Jungfraubahn train (Jungfrau Railway) to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe.

    Jungfraujoch (train)–>Kleine Scheidegg (train)–>Wengen (train)—> Lauterbrunnen (train)—>Interlaken OST (end)

    Their reply was:

Tickets from Interlaken Ost to Jungfraujoch can always be used on all the lines. (via Grindelwald by cogwheel train and Eiger Express Gondola and via Lauterbrunnen by cogwheel train).

During your stay a return ticket from Interlaken Ost to Jungfraujoch costs CHF 92.40 with Swiss Half Fare Card and CHF 120.20 with Swiss Travel Pass.

    Hi Ketoeato,

Thank you for sharing their answer. Sorry, I misunderstood your question. It is not a detour if you travel from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch. There are more options, on how you can reach the top: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/gettingthere. I thought you want to visit first Jungfraujoch, then Grindelwald and from Grindelwald you do not travel to Interlaken but you go to Wengen. That would be a detour where you would have to pay extra.

If you buy your ticket at STC (the official SBB tourist shop), you can choose how you get to Jungfraujoch and back to Interlaken: https://shop.switzerlandtravelcentre.com/en/product/excursionJungfraujoch.
