    Hi Tijoscaria,

Yes it is possible to do a day trip to Zermatt from Zurich. A useful tip is to take the earliest train possible so you’ll have enough time to spend at Gornergrat and explore Zermatt centre. You can find information on how to travel to Gornergrat here: http://www.myswissalps.com/gornergrat/gettingthere. You can explore Zermatt on foot as described here: http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking/zermatt

The Swiss Travel Pass provides unlimited free travel on Swiss public transport so there is no need to purchase tickets for the trains. For cable cars, gondolas, cogwheel trains and other mountain transportation, the Swiss Travel Pass provides discounts up to 50%. More information about the Swiss Travel Pass is available here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/howtouse.

When you purchase a Swiss Travel Pass, you can request for a complimentary Swiss Family Card which allows your children to travel along for free, even on mountain rides that require half-fare tickets. You can find more details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swissfamilycard

Gornergrat is accessible all year round. You can check the ticket prices here: http://www.myswissalps.com/gornergrat/tickets

    Regards,

    Anna

Understand that it is roughly a *7 hr round trip* journey to/from Zermatt. It will be a long day sitting on trains with young children.

If the visibility is good atop the Gornergrat then it may all be worthwhile. So I’d check the mountain forecast the day before and then make the call.

I agree with SteelyD, it is a long way to go for a day trip. However it can take as little as 3 hours 12 minutes each way if you pick the right trains – that is the trains designated route IC8. Taking one of these (eg 09.02) from Zurich HB will get you to Zermatt with just 1 change of train at Visp. Also, the IC8 train sets have a family coach with children’s play area.

Take a look at the official timetable PDF to see the pattern. On page 2/18 you will see route IC8 train number 810. FA is the code for family coach

    Hi Tijoscaria,

Thanks for sharing your itinerary. Personally I think your trip is already packed with plenty of interesting sights and excursions. I would try to stick to your current itinerary and enjoy the activities you have already planned. However if you’re really keen to see the Matterhorn, perhaps you can do the day trip to Zermatt on Day 2. A visit to the Lindt chocolate shop can be combined with your activities on Day 1 but you might have to drop Bern altogether.

Would that be an option for you?

    Regards,

    Anna
