Hi TravelLife,
Zermatt and the Matterhorn is definitely worth a visit even if you don’t plan to ski or hike.
For a close-up view of the Matterhorn, I recommend taking the cogwheel train up to Gornergrat. It’s also possible to take the gondola and cable car to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise on the same day if you start your trip early.

I agree with Anna 100%! We took the cogwheel train up to Gornergrat yesterday and the views are spectacular! It was fun to watch the skiers, even though we don’t ski. Some of the kids were as young as 4 years old! And there were lots of “seniors” as well. The terrace restaurant at the top was well reviewed by our fellow travelers, although we didn’t get anything. There is an observation theater included in your train price that has an IMAX type movie and a virtual reality experience. Also history of the climbers. The one caveat is the weather. We were very fortunate to have sun, but rain or low clouds would have obscured the Matterhorn. Zermatt was very friendly – and easy to navigate. We were there for less than 24 hours but I wouldn’t have missed it for anything! Good luck!

I definitely think a trip to Zermatt and Gornergrat is worth it! In fact, I think our trip to Switzerland would have seemed incomplete without seeing the iconic Matterhorn. We did do some hiking down from Gornergrat which enhanced our view of of the Matterhorn and the other peaks. But it’s not necessary to enjoy spectacular scenery!

Definitely worth the trip but you’ll likely end up wanting to stay longer. If you can stay at least one night, that would give you a second day and another chance (no guarantees) to see that iconic view of he Matterhorn, if the skies are clear. If your schedule is flexible, you could choose a day with clear skies and go as early as possible. When I bring someone there for the first time, I stay at least 3 nights but could easily spend a week there any time of year. If you can only take one excursion while in Zermatt, the Gornergrat mountain train ride is memorable. Sit on the right going up for views of the Matterhorn, and on the left on the way down. The views from the top are wonderful when the skies are clear. If you’re adventurous, the 20 minute helicopter tour takes you right up and around the summit of the Matterhorn. We were blessed with crystal clear blue skies last July, for our flight with Air-Zermatt. Highly recommend it if it is in the budget and the skies are clear (make a reservation in advance.)

Hi TravelLife,
Depending on from where coming, and the fact you’re not hiking or skiing, go to Zermatt! You will not regret it (unless the weather is bad). The Gornergrat was one of the highlights of my trip. Enjoy.
