Cogwheel train and cable car to Pilatus: which to use up and down?

Short summary – read this first

Wig is planning a trip to Pilatus with Swiss Travel Passes that include a cruise or bus ride from Lake Lucerne. They want to know which route provides better views: taking the cogwheel train up and coming down via cable car and gondola, or the other way around.

Key takeaways:
  • Start your excursion with the boat trip from Lucerne to Alpnachstad for great views.
  • Consider taking the cogwheel train up and then the cable car and gondola down for a varied experience.
  • With the Swiss Travel Pass, both the Lake Lucerne cruise and bus rides to Kriens are convenient options.

We have Swiss Travel passes which cover the Lake Lucerne cruise and the bus to Kriens. The up and down tickets to Pilatus cost 20 CHF with the travel passes. My question is are the views better with the cogwheel train going up and the cable car and gondola going down or the other way around. With the travel passes we can do the cruise or the bus either way.
    Thanks

    Hello Wig

First a generalisation about all Swiss mountain lines, whether they are cable car, funicular or cog-wheel.  I personally always find going down more exciting than going up!  (When going down sit/stand facing the direction of travel.)

On my very first day in Switzerland, back in August 1971, I went by boat to Alpnachstad, and then on the cog-wheel train up Pilatus.  Following advice from a guide book I still possess, I sat on the left facing the direction of travel.  I went down in the cable car, then the ‘Gondolas’.  54 years later, that is what I would recommend.

    Kind regard
    Roger

    Hi Wig,

Generally, I’d prefer starting the excursion with the boat trip from Lucerne to Alpnachstad, then take the cogwheel train up and spend an hour at the top. Later, take the cable car down to Fräkmuntegg, do the toboggan or zipline or picnic, and finally take the gondola down to Kriens and bus back to Lucerne.
