Discounted Silver Round Trip to Mt Pilatus

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Mt Pilatus and is curious about buying the Silver Pass ticket. They want to know if they should purchase tickets in advance, especially since the cogwheel train won’t be running during their visit on May 19, and they're wondering about possible alternatives.

Key takeaways:
  • Buy your Silver Pass ticket on the same day or one day in advance, since advance purchase is not necessary.
  • With a Swiss Half Fare Card, you can get a 50% discount on tickets.
  • If the cogwheel train isn't running, take the cable car from Kriens instead, which is easily accessible from Lucerne.

I’m a little confused about the Silver Pass ticket for Mt Pilatus. I followed the link on this site but the first available date for tickets was May 27. Then I tried to Google other options and it looks like you can purchase the ticket from the train station or other websites. Do I need to do this in advance? Does it “sell out” – if I have a Swiss rail half fare card is there a discount? We would be visiting on May 19, weather permitting. I guess I’m trying to figure out when and where to purchase that ticket! Also, if the cogwheel train is not running by that date what is the alternative? Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

    Hi Deac,

in case of mountain trips, we recommend getting your tickets if you already see the weather forecast. The best is to buy it just 1 day in advance or on the same day, on the spot. So there is no need to buy your ticket so early. So again, you can get the tickets on the spot or here if you prefer to buy them in advance: http://www.myswissalps.com/pilatus/tickets. But make sure to check the weather first. I use the app called MeteoSwiss. It is quite good, they also have cloud animation.

Yes, If you have a Swiss Half Fare Card, you get everything 50% off. See the validity map and list of the Swiss Half fare Card here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard/validity.

The cable car from Kriens operates during a large part of the year, except for 2 maintenance breaks: from 10 January to 18 February 2022, and from 24 October to 4 November 2022. The cogwheel train from Alpnachstad operates from 26 May to 20 November 2022. Read more here: http://www.myswissalps.com/pilatus/gettingthere.

Thank you for the helpful information.

Since the cogwheel train won’t be running during our visit, would we still purchase the Silver pass, and if so what is the alternative transportation for the cogwheel train? Or would we just purchase separate tickets for each leg of the trip?

    Hi Deac,

The cogwheel train from Alpnachstad to the top of Pilatus won’t be operational until May 26. During this period you can travel to Pilatus via the cable car and gondola from Kriens. Lucerne to Kriens is just a short bus ride away. Option to purchase the Pilatus tickets online are available here: shop.switzerlandtravelcentre.com/en/overview/excursion (select the half-fare option if you have a Swiss Half Fare Card).

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna
