Do I need to activate my Swiss Travel Pass?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Switzerland from Milan in June and is curious about the Swiss Travel Pass. They want to know if they need to activate the pass at the train station and if staying in Domodossola is necessary for a customs stamp for tax refund, as they will travel to Interlaken the next day.

Key takeaways:
  • No activation is needed for the Swiss Travel Pass; it is automatically valid from the start date for the duration purchased.
  • Staying overnight in Domodossola for customs is unnecessary; you can obtain the customs stamp at any official customs post in Switzerland within 7 working days.

Hi, I am planning to travel to Switzerland from Milan in June. I have read a lot about Swiss pass, I wish to know if I buy SP for 3 consecutive days online, do I need to activate it at the train station? Plan to travel to Domodossola from Milan on 5th, stay overnight because I might need the custom’s stamp for tax refund, on 6th morning, I will take the morning train to Interlaken. I am worried that there is no Swiss pass customer service counter at Domodossola Station, or if there is, it won’t open so early. I don’t need to buy the ticket from Domodossola to Interlaken, is that correct? Thank you.

Hello Ying and Welcome to MySwissAlps

No – there is no requirement to “validate” a Swiss Travel Pass. It is automatically valid from the start date for the number of days covered by the pass.

Never heard of anyone staying overnight in Domodossola to get a customs stamp. Maybe someone else can provide advice on the tax refund issue.

    Hello Ying

Find out in detail about validation and how to see if it’s needed following this link: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/howtouse

Normally it’s not needed but just make sure you cross-check the listed criteria.

Regarding the custom stamp for private goods you can also get this within 7 working days from any official custom post in Switzerland, so there’s no need to stay in Domodossola.

Here to the details on the Swiss Customs Administration page.

Just make sure you have the item, receipt and prove of incoming travel with you when going there.

    Hope this helps.

    Best,
    Steph
